The Qualifications We Seek
Education & Experience
- Tertiary qualification in Analytics, Statistics, Economics, Business or a related field, or equivalent experience
- 3 to 5 years experience in audience insights, analytics, research or related roles in media, digital subscriptions, e-commerce or similar data-rich environments
- Demonstrated experience leading or owning an insights function, or acting as lead analyst for key stakeholder groups
- Proven track record turning data into practical recommendations that influence decisions and deliver measurable outcomes
Capabilities & Competencies
- Strong understanding of subscription businesses, including acquisition, engagement, churn and LTV drivers
- Able to connect data from multiple sources and craft clear, concise narratives for non-technical audiences
- Confident working with senior editorial, product and commercial leaders; comfortable challenging assumptions with data
- Familiar with A/B testing and experimentation principles; able to interpret results and guide next actions
- Experience coaching analysts, setting standards, providing feedback and creating a supportive, high-performance environment
- Strong applied experience with SQL/BigQuery and BI tools (e.g. Looker Studio, Tableau, Power BI) and web/app analytics platforms; comfortable partnering with data science and engineering teams
- Structured Thinking & Planning - Able to break complex problems into clear frameworks, hypotheses and workplans
Your Daily Tasks
Audience & Subscriber Insight Leadership
- Lead the development of core audience and subscriber segmentations (value, lifecycle stage, engagement, content needs) and ensure they are consistently used by Growth, Retention, Pricing and Editorial
- Translate complex data (web/app analytics, subscriber systems, audience-needs models, engagement dashboards) into clear stories and recommendations for stakeholders
- Provide regular performance narratives and concise one-page summaries for brands and executive forums, focusing on what's happening, why, and what we'll do next
Editorial, Product & Marketing Partnership
- Partner with Editorial leaders to shape content and audience strategies, including topic/format focus, habit-building content, and audience development opportunities
- Work with Product and Subscriber Growth teams to understand and optimise anon-to-paid journeys, paywall performance, acquisition funnels and engagement loops
- Collaborate with Retention, CVM and Pricing to identify high-risk and high-value cohorts ahead of price changes or major initiatives, recommending targeted comms and value propositions
- Support Marketing and MarkOps with insight-driven briefs for campaigns (who to target, with what message, in which channel)
Experimentation & Test-and-Learn
- Partner closely with the Experimentation team to design, prioritise and interpret tests across paywalls, offers, messaging, content treatments and journeys
- Ensure experiments are well-framed, statistically robust and decision-oriented, with clear hypotheses, success metrics and next-step recommendations
- Help embed a test-and-learn culture in editorial, product and marketing teams by sharing case studies and principles
Reporting, Frameworks & Standards
- Define and maintain standard metrics, definitions and reporting frameworks for audience, engagement and subscription performance across brands
- Oversee the design of self-serve dashboards and recurring reports that give stakeholders a reliable view of performance without duplicating effort
- Ensure that reporting clearly distinguishes between diagnostic insight (what/why) and actionable opportunity (so what/now what)
People Leadership & Ways of Working
- Lead, mentor and develop a team of Audience Insights Analysts, setting expectations for quality, storytelling and stakeholder engagement
- Establish clear prioritisation and intake processes so the team can balance BAU reporting, strategic projects and quick-turn requests
- Role-model collaborative, transparent ways of working with Audience Data, Experimentation and other data teams, reducing duplication and aligning on shared frameworks
Key Metrics
- Impact of insights on subscription, engagement and revenue outcomes (e.g. improvements in DAUs, conversion, retention, LTV in target cohorts)
- Adoption and use of audience segmentations, dashboards and frameworks by stakeholder teams
- Quality and timeliness of executive-level reporting and recommendations
- Experimentation pipeline and outcomes (number and quality of tests influenced, clarity of read-outs, actions taken)
- Team health and development (engagement, retention, progression of Audience Insights team members)
