Job Description

**This is a full-time independent contractor role. Candidates must be able to commit exclusively to this position and not engage in part-time or freelance work once hired.**

Do you enjoy bringing structure to messy books, building strong processes, and leading teams through change Are you confident in owning the month-end close while guiding staff and communicating clearly with clients

We're hiring a Senior Accountant to join a fast-growing U.S. accounting firm supporting nonprofit and mission-driven clients. This role goes beyond review. You'll act as an owner and stabilizer, helping transition work in-house, clean up accounts, and define what good looks like across the team.

If you're someone who thrives in ambiguity, takes ownership, and enjoys building systems (and not just maintaining them) this could be a great fit.

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU

  • Competitive compensation package tailored to your experience and expertise
  • Guaranteed Year-End Bonus (inspired by 13th month pay) rewarding your hard work and dedication
  • Generous Paid Time Off (PTO) including vacation, sick leave, and holidays
  • Morning shift with flexible work schedule with 3-4 hours overlap with Pacific Time
  • 100% remote setup – work from the comfort of your home
  • Direct hire, full-time independent contractor role (no BPO involvement)
  • Career growth opportunities in a fast-evolving team
  • Supportive, people-first culture built on transparency, trust, and continuous improvement

CLIENT BACKGROUND

This U.S.-based accounting firm serves a diverse range of clients within the nonprofit, social enterprise, and advocacy spaces. From grassroots NGOs to policy-focused organizations, their clients trust them to deliver accurate, timely, and transparent financial support.

As the firm continues to bring accounting work in-house, they are focused on building a cohesive team that shares their passion for precision and their commitment to doing meaningful work. You'll be a key part of the leadership layer that helps shape the team's structure and success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Client Ownership & Close Management

  • Own the month-end close process end-to-end for multiple clients
  • Take over and transition accounts from external providers, including validating balances and rebuilding workpapers as needed
  • Handle messy or incomplete books, making sound judgment calls on what to fix vs. move forward
  • Prepare and review reconciliations, accruals, journal entries, and financial schedules
  • Ensure all deliverables are accurate, complete, and on time

Process Building & Standardization

  • Help define and enforce standard month-end workflows, checklists, and workpaper structures
  • Establish what good looks like across engagements and maintain consistency
  • Identify gaps and proactively improve processes for scalability

Team Leadership & Review

  • Review staff workpapers and close deliverables with structured, actionable feedback
  • Support training and development of team members
  • Act as the first level of escalation for accounting and process-related questions

Client-Facing Work

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients
  • Clearly explain financials to non-accounting stakeholders
  • Confidently follow up on outstanding items and push back when needed

Onboarding & Transitions

  • Lead client onboarding, including system setup, data validation, and workflow planning
  • Support transitions of new or restructured accounts

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • At least 4+ years of U.S. accounting experience with ownership of month-end close and consistent review of staff work
  • Strong experience handling messy books, transitions, and bringing accounts to a close-ready state
  • Proven ability to manage client relationships independently and communicate financials clearly
  • Solid understanding of GAAP and accrual accounting in a deadline-driven environment
  • Experience with structured workflows, process documentation, and onboarding new clients
  • Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online; familiarity with tools like Bill.com, Expensify, Ramp, Stripe, and Google Workspace
  • CPA and/or nonprofit experience is a plus
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and ownership mindset

TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Stable high-speed internet connection
  • Secluded workstation to ensure a private and distraction-free environment

DESCRIPTION OF IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Owner & Problem-Solver – You take full ownership of your accounts, proactively identifying issues and driving them through resolution rather than waiting for direction.
  • Comfortable with Ambiguity – You can navigate messy or incomplete books with confidence, using sound judgment to prioritize what needs to be fixed versus what can move forward.
  • Strong Reviewer & Mentor – You provide clear, constructive feedback and take an active role in helping team members improve the quality and consistency of their work.
  • Process Builder – You enjoy creating structure, documenting workflows, and establishing standards that help the team operate more efficiently and consistently.
  • Client-Ready Communicator – You're confident leading conversations, explaining financials in a clear and practical way, and following up or pushing back when needed.
  • Organized & Deadline-Driven – You're able to manage multiple clients and competing priorities while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
