Job Description

The US Indirect Tax Supervisor plays a vital role in leading and mentoring a team of tax professionals to ensure accurate and timely compliance with indirect tax regulations. This role involves overseeing various tax processes, including the preparation and filing of tax returns, managing tax audits, and providing exceptional client service. The ideal candidate possesses extensive knowledge of indirect tax laws, strong leadership and project management skills, and a commitment to accuracy and efficiency. Responsibilities include managing tax registrations and renewals, conducting research, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, and staying abreast of industry trends and best practices.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have

  • A Bachelor's degree in Accountancy, Accounting Technology, Management Accounting, Finance, and other related fields.
  • At least 3 to 5 years of related work experience in US indirect tax, including Sales Tax, Use Tax, and other relevant state and local taxes.
  • Outstanding leadership skills with a proven ability to mentor, coach, and train team members to improve performance, foster professional growth, and build a high-performing, collaborative team environment.
  • Exceptional project management skills to effectively manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines while ensuring team success and maintaining high standards of quality.
  • Extensive knowledge and experience on US indirect tax compliance laws, regulations, and best practices, including Sales Tax, Use Tax, Excise Tax, and other relevant federal, state, and local tax laws.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving abilities with the capability to identify tax-saving opportunities and resolve complex tax issues.
  • Experience with tax preparation software that demonstrates the ability to efficiently and accurately prepare tax returns, identify potential errors, and ensure compliance with all applicable tax regulations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail, accuracy, and quality in all work performed, consistently meet deadlines and deliver high-quality results that exceed client expectations.
  • Strong critical thinking and evaluation skills to effectively collect and analyze data from various sources, including financial statements, operational reports, and industry data.
  • The ability to build strong client relationships by providing clear tax advice, ensuring accurate and timely preparation of tax returns, and addressing client needs efficiently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with colleagues, clients, and other stakeholders.
  • Advanced proficiency in using industry-standard productivity tools, such as Microsoft Office and Google Suite Applications to streamline workflow and enhance productivity.

Responsibilities

The right fit Scrubbee will

  • Lead the preparation and filing of complex annual, quarterly, and monthly indirect tax filings, including but not limited to Sales & Use Tax, Gross Receipts Tax, Property Tax, Excise Tax, Franchise Tax, and State Annual Reports.
  • Supervise, mentor, and train a team of tax professionals to enhance technical expertise, improve accuracy, and ensure high-quality work aligned with regulatory standards and best practices.
  • Lead and manage tax audit engagements, overseeing the compilation of supporting documentation and the preparation of comprehensive responses to auditor inquiries.
  • Manage tax-related escalations with professionalism and integrity, promptly identifying issues, implementing effective solutions, and ensuring timely resolutions that uphold compliance, team performance, and client satisfaction.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients, providing exceptional service and building strong relationships through proactive communication, prompt responses to inquiries, and comprehensive tax guidance.
  • Come up with comprehensive tax reports, presentations, and supporting documentation with precision, ensuring clear and effective communication that supports informed decision-making and facilitates smooth collaboration between teams and clients.
  • Manage and facilitate the preparation, submission, and filing of required federal and local tax registrations, business license renewals, and regulatory fees, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws and deadlines.
  • Conduct thorough research on indirect tax issues, utilizing primary and secondary sources to provide well-supported guidance and recommendations to clients.
  • Liaise with state revenue offices, conducting professional correspondence and obtaining necessary tax advice or confirmations to address inquiries and ensure compliance.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation for all indirect tax-related activities, including tax registrations, filings, audits, and other relevant records, ensuring proper data management and storage.
  • Work closely with tax associates across all phases of project and engagement management for multiple clients, while maintaining clear communication and ensuring client satisfaction.
  • Facilitate team meetings and client conference calls, facilitating clear communication, setting expectations, and ensuring alignment on tax strategies, project progress, and deliverables.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams and clients to ensure accurate tax preparation, address inquiries, and provide proactive solutions to meet compliance and business objectives.
  • Lead and actively participate in internal training sessions and workshops, fostering a collaborative learning environment and promoting knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Review simple tax returns prepared by staff members and make recommendations on return preparation regarding accuracy and tax savings opportunities.
  • Provide timely, constructive feedback to team members, fostering continuous improvement, professional development, and high-quality work outcomes.
  • Participate in other tax administrative filings such as preparation of annual state reports, business renewal, state registrations, property tax, and other administrative filings.
  • Stay updated on tax laws, industry trends, and best practices to ensure compliance, enhance accuracy, and recommend process improvements that align with organizational goals and drive operational excellence.

Preferred Skills and Experience

It would be an advantage to have

  • A proven track record of successful leadership and team management in a supervisory capacity, with a demonstrated ability to effectively lead and mentor teams, delegate tasks and foster a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
  • Knowledge of continuous process improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean or Six Sigma) and experience optimizing workflows to enhance system performance.
  • Relevant professional certifications, such as CPA, CIA, CMA, CISA, or Enrolled Agent (EA), demonstrating a commitment to professional development and expertise in taxation.
