Job Description
About the role
This role calls for a senior automation engineer with deep expertise in mobile testing and automation and in CI/CD integration, and a track record of building a robust testing environment or solution. The engineer will lead the mobile test automation initiative: setting the direction, making the architecture decisions, building the foundation, and bringing the rest of the team along.
The role is platform-agnostic. The work covers both iOS and Android. A background in Appium is preferred but, Espresso, XCUITest, Maestro, Detox or another tool is equally relevant.
Responsibilities- Lead the initiative: define the mobile automation strategy, roadmap and success metrics, and report progress to QA and engineering leadership.
- Build the framework: design and build the mobile automation framework, owning architecture decisions such as project structure, screen-object or page-object design, configuration, reporting and extensibility.
- Integrate with CI/CD: connect the mobile suites to the pipeline, covering app build and signing, emulator, simulator or device-farm runs, parallel execution, and merge and release gates driven by test results.
- Keep the suite trustworthy: track flakiness and stability, find root causes, and run a quarantine workflow so that a failing build is a reliable signal.
- Shape the test strategy: apply the full test pyramid, moving coverage down to the API, contract or component level wherever an end-to-end UI test is not the right tool.
- Modernize existing tests: replace or migrate legacy tests, move teams onto the new framework, and cut pipeline feedback time.
- Apply AI where it helps: evaluate and adopt AI-assisted tools for generating and maintaining test scripts, and set guardrails where they fall short.
- Raise the bar: review test code to the same standard as application code, set conventions, and mentor engineers on automation practice.
- Partner across teams: work with mobile developers, backend engineers and product so features are testable from the start.
- 5+ years in test automation, including 3+ years automating both iOS and Android production apps.
- Has built a mobile automation framework from scratch and made its architecture decisions, such as project structure, the screen-object pattern or page-object model, configuration, reporting and extensibility.
- Has personally integrated mobile test suites into a CI/CD pipeline (e.g., GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins). This includes app build and signing, emulator/simulator or device-farm execution, parallelization, and turning test results into merge or release gates.
- Writes production-quality code in at least one general-purpose language (Kotlin/Java, Swift, TypeScript/JavaScript or Python). Test code is held to the same review standards as application code.
- Has measurably reduced flakiness in a real suite and can explain the approach: diagnosing root causes, stabilizing waits and synchronization, isolating test data, running quarantine workflows and tracking stability.
- Has led a modernization or migration effort with measurable results, for example replacing a legacy suite, moving teams onto a new framework, or cutting pipeline feedback time.
- Understands the full test pyramid and can say when not to write an end-to-end UI test, pushing coverage down to the API, contract or component level instead.
- Has experience with AI automation and AI-assisted tools for test script generation or maintenance, with good judgment about their limits.
- Experience testing in fintech, payments or another regulated industry, including handling sensitive data safely in test environments.
- API and contract testing (e.g., REST Assured, Postman/Newman, Pact).
- Real-device cloud platforms (e.g., BrowserStack, Sauce Labs, AWS Device Farm, Firebase Test Lab).
- Basics of mobile performance, accessibility or security testing.
