Job Description

I. BACKGROUND

Clean Air Asia is an international non-governmental organization leading the regional mission for better air quality, and healthier, more livable cities throughout Asia. Our mission is to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in Asia and contribute to the development of a more sustainable, equitable and healthier region. We empower governments and cities by inspiring action and focusing efforts on the planning and implementation of solutions at scale, fostering regional cooperation to address issues of mutual concern, and ensuring the integration of air quality management across sectors and institutions. Our work focuses on implementing solutions that reduce air pollution, and its detrimental health impacts and mitigate the climate crisis. We do so by providing policy guidance, building capacity, and making a compelling case for action among stakeholders at city, national, and regional levels. Since 2008, we have been a United Nations-recognized partnership comprised of more than 250 organizations in Asia and internationally, with six Country Networks (Indonesia, Malaysia, Nepal, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam). Our headquarters are in Manila, Philippines, and we have offices in Beijing, China, New Delhi, India, and Jakarta, Indonesia.

Clean Air Asia has been accepting interns from all over the world since 2007 to provide students (undergraduate/graduate) with the opportunity to improve their skills and experience working in a diverse environment. Previous interns appreciated the improved understanding on air quality and related topics, gained practical skills in knowledge management and project management, established friendships and contacts that could help in their future career plans. Previous interns include students or young professionals from Asia - China, Philippines, Singapore and Sri Lanka/ and outside Asia France, Germany, Netherlands, Sweden and United States.

e-mobility ASAP Project

The Accelerating the Adoption and Scale Up of Electric Mobility for Low-Carbon City Development in the Philippines or e-mobility ASAP Project, implemented in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Board of Investments (BOI), and UNIDO, supports the development of the Philippine electric vehicle (EV) industry. The project delivers policy support, technical assistance, and stakeholder capacity-building to promote local EV manufacturing, investment, and adoption.

The e-mobility ASAP Project supports the BOI in the finalization of the EV Incentive Strategy (EVIS) in order to incentivize local EV and EV parts manufacturing. Part of the initiative is to provide technical guidance and policy support to BOI on policy development, economic research, and e-mobility industry developments, particularly in regional automotive and EV-related news. To support the implementation and documentation of these initiatives, the Project seeks and intern who will assist in industry development research and data gathering efforts on the automotive and EV industries.

II. OBJECTIVES, SCOPE, AND OUTPUTS

By the end of the internship, Intern is expected to have:

  • better appreciation of Clean Air Asia's work to promote better air quality and livable cities through sustainable transport interventions
  • gained understanding of the organization's approach to planning and implementing sustainable transport initiatives under the Avoid-Shift-Improve framework
  • aligned and applied his/her academic background to Clean Air Asia's work

The intern will support the e-mobility ASAP project team in research, documentation, coordination, and communication activities across its components.

III. IMPLEMENTATION (TASKS)

Under the supervision of the Project Coordinator, the intern will perform the following tasks:

  • Support to EV Incentive Strategy Development

Provide analytical and desk-research support to the finalization of the EV Incentive Strategy. Tasks include:

  • Conduct desk research on finalizing provisions on the EV Incentive Strategy (EVIS)
  • Support in development of economic recommendations to BOI, including net fiscal balance, tax revenue of the government, and macroeconomic analysis
  • Mapping and summarizing international and regional case studies (e.g. ASEAN, East Asia, Latin America), highlighting incentive design, eligibility criteria, and implementation challenges.
  • Supporting the preparation and finalization of policy briefs, research papers, comparison tables, and slide materials for internal discussions and stakeholder consultations.
  • Assisting in the compilation and organization of regulatory references, laws, executive issuances, and incentive guidelines as may be deemed necessary.
  • Automotive and e-mobility Industry Research

Support the development of industry-focused research and reports related to the automotive and e-mobility ecosystem. Tasks include:

  • Gathering and organizing data on EV sales, production, imports, market trends, and supply chains, as available from public and industry sources.
  • Assisting in the preparation of industry landscape assessments, including key players, value chains, and emerging technologies.
  • Supporting cost, market, and trend analysis for EVs, components, and related infrastructure (charging, batteries, manufacturing).
  • Helping draft background sections, figures, and tables for automotive and e-mobility reports.
  • Weekly EV News Monitoring and Data Gathering

Support regular monitoring of developments in the EV and automotive sector, in coordination with the Project Associate. Tasks include:

  • Conducting weekly scans of EV-related news (policy, industry, investments, technology, and regional developments).
  • Curating and summarizing key news items relevant to EV incentives, manufacturing, and market trends.
  • Maintaining a simple tracker or database of EV-related announcements, policy updates, and major industry movements.
  • Preparing short weekly digests or briefing notes for internal use.
  • Other Tasks
  • Supporting ad-hoc data requests related to EV policy, automotive markets, and e-mobility initiatives.
  • Assisting with presentation materials, fact-checking, and citations.
  • Coordinating closely with project staff to meet internal timelines and deliverables.
  • Perform additional assignments as may be required by the Project Coordinator.

The timeline of submission of these deliverables shall be discussed and agreed with the intern's supervisor/s.

Iv. Qualifications

  • A graduate or student in a relevant field such as economics, public administration, political science, environmental science, engineering, environmental management, environmental engineering, social sciences, and other related fields
  • With an interest in the field of environmental policy and governance, air quality management, sustainable transport, and climate change mitigation
  • Able to demonstrate excellent research and report writing skills
  • Able to work independently and also as part of a team
  • Able to participate in online and face-to-face meetings and activities
