PROGRAM BACKGROUND

International Medical Corps IMC) is a global, humanitarian, non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, non-political, non-sectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.

In the Philippines, IMC has supported communities affected by natural disasters such as typhoons, earthquakes, volcanic eruption and floods. Its interventions have included emergency medical care, nutrition in emergency, distribution of hygiene kits and non-food items, and rehabilitation of damaged health facilities. IMC's work emphasizes rapid response, resilience building, and close collaboration with local government units (LGUs) to ensure aid reaches those most in need.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

The Nurse contributes to advancing International Medical Corps mission by supporting the Medical Doctor and the broader medical team in ensuring access to quality health services for vulnerable populations. Through coordinating with local partner, the implementation medical mission, patient triage, facilitation of smooth patient flow, delivery of clinical care, assistance with referrals, and promotion of health education and hygiene practices, the Program Officer (EMT Nurse) strengthens community health systems and enhances resilience. In collaboration with the Medical Doctor, the Nurse plays a key role in community health outreach and preparedness for emergencies, including rapid deployment within 48 hours following typhoons or other crises to ensure continuity of care. By adhering to national policies, international humanitarian standards, and IMC's Code of Conduct, the Nurse supports safeguarding lives, promoting well-being, and addressing urgent health needs in identified project sites.

MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Support for EMT deployment

  • As part of disaster preparedness, develop the country level medical emergency response framework of IMC Philippines in collaboration with program team.
  • In consultation with Program Manager, coordinate with Municipal Health Officer (MHO) in the disaster affected area to gather information for planning and implementation of emergency medical response.
  • Work closely with HR Officer to mobilize the EMT members, based on the established roster of medical professionals.
  • Work closely with Logistic Officer for the logistic arrangement in the deployment of medical team
  • Facilitate the briefing of EMT members before deployment.

Clinical Care & Procedures

  • Manage triage, take vital signs, and organize patients for consultation in collaboration with designated local health unit staff.
  • Perform clinical procedures such as dressing, suturing, and wound care.
  • Administer vaccinations for children and pregnant women.
  • Support laboratory investigations and other diagnostic services.
  • Oversee the preparing, labeling, and dispensing of medicines, providing clear instructions and counselling to patients.

Patient Registration & Data Management

  • In collaboration with M&E Officer, maintain accurate records of patients for case management and for monitoring of patients directly reached by emergency response.

Health Education & Community Outreach

  • Provide health education and hygiene promotion tailored to patient diagnoses and comorbidities using available IEC materials.
  • Promote disease prevention, vaccination awareness, and lifestyle changes.
  • In collaboration with Nutritionist, participate in malnutrition screening and services for children under five.

Specialized & Sensitive Care

  • Assist in physical examinations for maternal and newborn health patients, particularly in cases involving vulnerable groups.

EDUCATION & SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be a Registered Nurse with valid license to practice or a similar required qualification in the country for the position.
  • At least 2+ experience as a Nurse in public health setting
  • Experience in program implementation relating to primary health care, maternal and child health, OB/GYN, communicable and non-communicable diseases and emergency/outbreak response is preferable.
  • Previous NGO experience is an advantage.
  • Good communications skills, both oral and written
  • Strong organizational and supervisory skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work within different cultural environments
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Ability to work within a team structure or independently, flexible, and can cope with stressful workload
