Job Description

The Tier 1 Network Engineer serves as the first line of execution and support for standard network connectivity services for Network Infrastructure Delivery team. This role is responsible for managing day-to-day circuit activations, decommissions, service verification, and basic troubleshooting activities to ensure accurate and timely delivery of services.

Working closely with carriers, internal operations teams, and Tier 2 engineers, the engineer ensures that circuit configurations are validated, documentation is maintained, and service requests are executed in accordance with established processes. This position requires strong attention to detail, effective communication skills, and a solid foundational understanding of networking concepts, while providing opportunities for continuous learning and career progression within network operations.

Responsibilities

  • Activate, configure, and decommission standard network circuits in accordance with established processes.
  • Validate circuit assignments, port configurations, and service details to ensure accuracy and readiness.
  • Track newly activated and decommissioned circuits using approved tracking systems, project boards, and tools.
  • Process standard service orders and change requests, including service verification and remediation when required.
  • Perform basic Layer 1 troubleshooting in coordination with carriers and internal operations teams.
  • Identify and assess physical connectivity issues, including cabling and port-related concerns.
  • Review and interpret test results such as RFC, BERT, and OTDR, and support Quality Assurance (QA) activities initiated by Tier 2.
  • Escalate complex or non-standard issues to Tier 2 following defined escalation procedures.
  • Create completion reports and ensure accurate, timely updates to documentation, tracking tools, and internal systems.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for operational email management and provide clear status updates to stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with carriers, vendors, and internal teams through meetings and calls to support service delivery.
  • Utilize network monitoring and management tools to support service verification and troubleshooting.
  • Assist in onboarding and training new team members, support knowledge sharing initiatives, and handle Peering and CSP capacity-related tasks as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in network operations or Layer 1 troubleshooting.
  • Experience handling various circuit types and standard connectivity services.
  • Intermediate understanding of BGP fundamentals.
  • Ability to assess and interpret network test results (RFC, BERT, OTDR).
  • Strong proficiency in professional email communication and technical documentation.
  • High attention to detail with strong task ownership and follow-through.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and external partners.
  • Familiarity with network monitoring, management, and tracking tools.
  • Nice to have: CCNA or JNCIA certification; basic knowledge of copper and fiber cabling systems.
