Your Role
As a Medical Coder - Inpatient, you will:
  • Assign appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient records following ICD-CM, ICD-PCS, AHA Coding Clinic, AHIMA ethical standards, CMS guidelines, and internal procedures.
  • Analyze inpatient documentation to determine principal and secondary diagnoses, principal and secondary procedures, MS-DRG, APR DRG, POA, SOI, ROM indicators, HACs, and PSIs to ensure accurate hospital reimbursement.
  • Utilize encoder software and EMR systems (Epic, Cerner, Meditech) to accurately code records.
  • Review documentation to support coding decisions and reduce claim denials.
  • Work on claim edits, combined accounts, and ensure compliance with 72-hour rule and other account combine scenarios.
  • Safeguard patient health information in compliance with HIPAA standards.
  • Consult with physicians, Clinical Documentation Specialists (CDS), and other providers to clarify ambiguous documentation.
  • Track and follow up on missing documentation via EMR communication tools.
  • Collaborate with HIM and Patient Financial Services (PFS) teams to resolve billing, claims, denial, and appeal issues affecting reimbursement.
  • Maintain CEUs, coding knowledge, and awareness of regulatory changes affecting inpatient coding.
  • Identify and report coding or EMR workflow issues and coding ethics concerns to supervisors.
  • Perform abstraction of additional data elements as required.
  • Complete other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
What You Need
Non-negotiables
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years inpatient coding experience.
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in allied health field.
  • Credential/Certification: Active Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC), or Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP).
  • RCM Knowledge: Proficient in medical terminology, anatomy & physiology, diagnostic/procedural coding, MS-DRG, APR DRG assignment, POA, SOI, ROM, HACs, and PSIs. Knowledge of HIPAA regulations.
  • Software Knowledge: Proficiency with EMR systems such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills (CEFR B2 minimum).
Preferred skills/expertise
  • Master's degree or credential in business, healthcare, or related field preferred.
  • Registered Nurse (PHRN or USRN) license preferred.
  • Experience with encoder/grouping software or Computer-Assisted Coding (CAC), e.g., 3M, Encoder Pro, Codify.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint).
  • Prior experience with US healthcare providers or payers.
  • Strong attention to detail, follow-up, and follow-through skills.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and complex decisions.
  • Demonstrates teamwork, integrity, and professional communication.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience in a matrixed environment.
