Job Description
About the Client
Our client is an established healthcare technology company whose EMR platform is used by thousands of rehabilitation and therapy practices across the U.S. As the company continues to grow, they are expanding into specialized medical billing services to provide more comprehensive support to their clients.
This role is one of the first hires for the new billing operation, giving you the opportunity to work closely with experienced leadership and help build the processes and team as the business grows.
About the Role
We're building a specialized medical billing team supporting physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and behavioral health practices across the U.S.
We're looking for a well-rounded Medical Billing Specialist who can work across billing, payment posting, accounts receivable, and denial management. This is an early-stage team, so we're looking for someone who is hands-on, collaborative, comfortable with change, and interested in helping build processes as the business grows.
The first members of the team will work closely with experienced billing leadership and may eventually help train and support new team members.
What You'll Do
- Audit provider-entered charges for accuracy and submit claims through electronic clearinghouses.
- Review and correct rejected claims and resubmit as needed.
- Post insurance and patient payments and reconcile discrepancies.
- Review EOBs/ERAs to identify underpayments, incorrect payments, and outstanding balances.
- Perform regular A/R follow-up with insurance companies.
- Investigate unpaid and denied claims and determine the appropriate resolution.
- Manage denials and appeals, including correcting billing issues and resubmitting claims.
- Communicate directly with insurance companies by phone and electronically.
- Work with commercial insurance, Medicare, Medicaid, and workers compensation payers.
- Verify insurance eligibility and understand authorization/referral requirements.
- Respond to patient billing inquiries and assist with collection-related communications as the process develops.
- Help create and document SOPs and improve billing workflows as the team grows.
- Collaborate with the billing team and support the training of future team members.
What We're Looking For
- 2–5+ years of U.S. medical billing experience.
- Strong experience with claims follow-up, A/R, and denial management.
- Ability to read and interpret EOBs and ERAs and identify payment discrepancies.
- Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS.
- Experience working with U.S. insurance payers.
- Strong understanding of the medical revenue cycle.
- Experience with clearinghouses such as Availity, Office Ally, Change Healthcare, or similar platforms.
- Experience with payment posting and reconciliation.
- Rehabilitation/therapy billing experience is strongly preferred — particularly physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, or behavioral health.
- Strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills; comfortable speaking with insurance representatives.
- Proficiency with Excel or Google Sheets.
- Experience with EMR/EHR or medical billing systems. Training on our specific systems will be provided.
- Comfortable working independently in a small, growing team environment.
Work Setup
- 100% remote
- 40 hours/week
- U.S. business hours
- Initial team coverage across Eastern and Pacific Time
- Windows-based computer required
- Private/dedicated workspace strongly preferred due to access to Protected Health Information (PHI)
Why Join
This is an opportunity to help build a specialized billing operation from the ground up. You'll work closely with experienced leadership, help establish processes and SOPs, and have the opportunity to take on additional responsibilities as the team grows.
If you're someone who enjoys solving billing problems, taking ownership, collaborating with a small team, and improving processes, we'd love to hear from you.
