Job Description

The Junior Underwriter develops and maintains underwriting SOPs and criteria that ensure regulatory compliance while managing daily underwriting operations in collaboration with local and regional teams. This role drives system enhancements and process optimizations through cross-functional collaboration and support quality assurance and UAT to enhance underwriting efficiency and product experience.

  • Perform Underwriting Operations

Review and process new business, renewal, endorsement, and other underwriting transactions in accordance with approved underwriting guidelines, procedures, and service level agreements.

Evaluate applications and supporting documents for completeness, accuracy, eligibility, and compliance with underwriting requirements.

Process assigned underwriting cases within established quality, productivity, and turnaround-time standards.

Identify incomplete, inconsistent, or potentially material information and coordinate for the necessary clarification or additional documentation.

  • Conduct Risk Assessment and Underwriting Review

Assess standard risks within delegated underwriting authority and recommend appropriate underwriting action based on established guidelines.

Validate applicable premiums, benefits, policy limits, deductibles, exclusions, eligibility criteria, and other underwriting parameters.

Identify non-standard risks, exceptions, and cases outside delegated authority and escalate them to the Senior Underwriter or Underwriting Lead with an initial assessment and recommendation.

Support the review of claims-related underwriting referrals, including validation of policy issuance, declarations, and underwriting information, as required.

  • Support Process, System, and Product Improvements

Identify recurring operational issues, process gaps, and opportunities to improve underwriting efficiency and accuracy.

Provide inputs for the development and updating of underwriting guidelines, SOPs, manuals, and work instructions.

Participate in User Acceptance Testing for underwriting system enhancements, product configurations, and new product implementations.

Document test results, raise identified issues, and support validation of system fixes and configurations prior to implementation.

  • Maintain Underwriting Governance and Compliance

Ensure underwriting transactions are processed in accordance with approved guidelines, internal policies, regulatory requirements, and established controls.

Maintain complete and accurate underwriting records and documentation to support auditability and proper case management.

Support internal audits, regulatory reviews, and partner inquiries by providing requested records, case information, and supporting documentation.

Escalate identified underwriting discrepancies, exceptions, control issues, or potential compliance concerns to the appropriate reviewer.

  • Collaborate with Cross-Functional Stakeholders

Partner with Product, Commercial, Operations, and other business units to support product implementation, underwriting enhancements, and operational initiatives.

Provide underwriting expertise during product development, system changes, and strategic projects to ensure seamless implementation and operational effectiveness.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree / 4-Year Course Graduate
  • At least 1–2 years of relevant experience in insurance underwriting, policy administration, or other related insurance operations; exposure to General Insurance products is preferred
  • Basic to intermediate knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, policy terms and conditions, premiums, limits, deductibles, exclusions, and underwriting controls
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess standard risks and identify cases requiring escalation
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy, particularly in reviewing applications, policy information, and supporting documents
  • Good written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to manage assigned workloads and meet established quality, productivity, and turnaround-time requirements
