SUMMARY
The Junior Database Administrator (DBA) supports the administration, monitoring, and maintenance of mission-critical database environments in a high-availability financial services setting. This role operates within a 24/7 staff augmentation model and works closely with internal database leadership, senior DBAs, application teams, and infrastructure teams. The Junior DBA is responsible for operational support across Production, UAT, and Development environments, ensuring database stability, performance, and compliance with established change management and incident response procedures.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
DATABASE OPERATIONS AND SUPPORT
- Monitor and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments (primary platform) across Production, UAT, and Dev.
- Support one Oracle database environment (OCI) in coordination with senior DBA resources.
- Execute database maintenance tasks, including backups, restores, index maintenance, patching support, and integrity checks.
- Assist in troubleshooting database incidents and participate in root cause analysis (RCA).
- Respond to database-related alerts and escalations in accordance with defined SLAs and call trees.
INCIDENT AND CHANGE MANAGEMENT
- Manage and update work items through Jira in alignment with formal change and incident management processes.
- Follow established Agile-like workflows for ticket intake, assignment, and resolution.
- Ensure proper documentation of changes and operational procedures in Confluence.
- Participate in post-incident reviews and documentation updates.
PERFORMANCE AND OPTIMIZATION
- Support query performance tuning efforts under the guidance of senior DBAs.
- Assist developers in identifying poorly performing queries and
- recommending indexing improvements.
- Monitor database growth, capacity, and performance metrics.
CLOUD AND HYBRID SUPPORT
- Support Azure-hosted SQL databases.
- Assist in operational tasks related to hybrid cloud environments.
- Contribute to migration readiness activities for on-premises Data Warehouse and risk database workloads.
COMPLIANCE AND CONTROLS
- Operate within financial services regulatory and audit frameworks.
- Ensure adherence to security, access control, and data governance standards.
- Support audit requests and evidence gathering.
QUALIFICATIONS
- One to three years of experience administering Microsoft SQL Server.
- Foundational understanding of backup and restore processes, SQL performance basics, indexing concepts, and high-availability concepts (Always On and clustering preferred).
- Experience working in ticketing systems, with Jira preferred.
- Familiarity with documentation tools such as Confluence or similar platforms.
- Exposure to cloud database platforms, with Azure SQL preferred.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Ability to work in a 24/7 rotational support environment.
NICE TO HAVE
- Exposure to Oracle databases.

- Basic scripting skills, including PowerShell and T-SQL.
