Job Description

This role blends instructional design expertise, copy editing precision, and production-level quality assurance. The ideal candidate brings experience designing for an education publisher and has a meticulous eye for detail, strong command of grammar and style (Chicago Manual of Style), and deep familiarity with curriculum structure and learner-centered design principles.

About the Role

This is not a leadership role; however, it requires strong cross-functional collaboration with writers, curriculum developers, and production designers. The successful candidate thrives in fast-paced production cycles and takes pride in delivering error-free, publisher-ready instructional materials.

Responsibilities

Instructional Design & Product Development

  • Develop and refine visual frameworks that support accessibility, usability, and a strong educator/student experience.
  • Provide expert input on visual hierarchy, layout decisions, and learner-centered design techniques.
  • Ensure instructional materials align to pedagogical best practices and product standards.
  • Support continuous improvement of instructional products through a design-quality lens.

Copy Editing & Editorial Review

  • Edit written content for grammatical accuracy, clarity, tone, and consistency in alignment with copy editing guidelines.
  • Apply client-specific style and branding guidelines consistently across all deliverables.
  • Review materials to ensure content is error-free and well-structured.
  • Ensure internal consistency across large volumes of content (terminology, headings, labels, formatting, instructions).
  • Flag inconsistencies, unclear language, or structural issues for writers and curriculum teams.

Quality Assurance & Production Review

  • Conduct detailed QA reviews of publisher-ready drafts to ensure alignment with templates, formatting standards, and design specifications.
  • Perform spot-check formatting and style reviews across large content sets.
  • Review design outputs to ensure visual and textual accuracy prior to final delivery.
  • Work efficiently under tight deadlines while maintaining exceptional accuracy.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in instructional design, educational product design, graphic design, or related field.
  • Exceptional fluency in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to edit quickly and accurately within fast-paced production workflows.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to producing error-free work.
  • Proficiency in design and editing tools (e.g., Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Figma, Google Workspace, Microsoft Word & PPT, PDF markup tools).
  • Ability to pass a standard copy edit assessment.

Preferred Skills

  • Secondary mathematics instruction experience.
  • Experience as a designer or editor at a curriculum or publishing organization.
  • Experience editing curriculum or instructional materials.
  • Familiarity with accessibility considerations in educational design.
  • Experience working with style guides, editorial checklists, and version-controlled documents.
  • Experience collaborating with external production or design vendors.
