Job Description

Role Overview

The Portfolio Product Owner leads the strategic direction, architectural alignment, and delivery outcomes for an enterprise application portfolio across key regional insurance markets. Positioned at the intersection of digital insurance strategy and modern software engineering, this role balances near-term business capability delivery with multi-year platform modernization, legacy application rationalization, and operational resilience.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Portfolio Roadmap: Own and execute the multi-quarter technology roadmap for core insurance platforms (e.g., policy administration, underwriting, claims, and digital distribution portals), aligning technology capabilities with business growth and digital transformation goals.

  • Digital Modernization & Architecture: Drive application rationalization, legacy platform consolidation, and technical migration toward cloud-native architectures, API-first integration patterns, and microservices.

  • Demand Prioritization & Governance: Partner with business executive sponsors and change delivery partners to balance competing priorities-from high-impact digital features and automated workflows to tech debt remediation, operational stability, and regulatory compliance requirements.

  • Cross-Functional Delivery Execution: Lead multi-squad ecosystems spanning software engineering, architecture, data analytics, security, and IT operations. Oversee hybrid delivery models incorporating onshore engineering, offshore squads, and third-party software vendors.

  • Portfolio Performance & Quality Metrics: Establish and monitor portfolio-level KPIs covering delivery velocity, software quality, release stability, and business outcomes across the application lifecycle.

  • Talent Leadership & Mentorship: Manage, coach, and develop a team of Senior Product Owners and Product Owners, fostering strong product ownership practices, technical rigor, and domain expertise.

Qualifications & Key Requirements

  • Industry Experience: 10 to 15+ years of experience in technology product ownership, application delivery, systems analysis, or digital transformation within the insurance space (Property & Casualty, Life & Health, or Commercial lines).

  • Leadership Track Record: At least 5 years of direct people management and team leadership experience, with a proven ability to coach and elevate Product Owners in complex environments.

  • Digital & Technical Fluency: Deep understanding of modern software architecture, including cloud environments (AWS/Azure/GCP), RESTful APIs, microservices, and system integrations between core insurance engines and modern digital front-ends.

  • Platform Transformation: Demonstrated success in modernizing core legacy platforms, rationalizing application portfolios, and scaling digital capabilities.

  • Stakeholder & Risk Management: Exceptional capability to negotiate priorities with C-suite/senior stakeholders, navigate regulatory complexity, and manage trade-offs between delivery speed, technical debt, and risk.

  • Vendor & Partner Management: Hands-on experience directing hybrid execution models, including vendor-led teams and offshore development hubs.

  • Education & Certification: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical discipline. Product ownership or agile certifications (e.g., CSPO, SAFe POPM) are strongly preferred.
