Data Engineer (Microsoft Fabric & Azure)

About the Role

We are seeking a Data Engineer to help modernize and scale our enterprise data platform. Reporting to the Lead Data Engineer or Director of Applications and Data, you will join a lean, high-impact team working closely with data, analytics, and IT stakeholders. You will design, build, and maintain secure, scalable data pipelines using Microsoft Fabric and Azure, ensuring data is reliable, analytics-ready, and governed to enterprise standards. This role offers strong ownership, hands-on technical work, and growth in a modern cloud environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain data pipelines and integrations using Microsoft Fabric, Azure Data Factory, and Azure services.
  • Develop and optimize ETL/ELT workflows to ensure data quality, performance, and reliability.
  • Monitor, test, validate, and troubleshoot production data pipelines.
  • Automate data workflows and support CI/CD practices for data solutions.
  • Partner with Data, IT, and business teams to translate requirements into effective data models and solutions.
  • Coordinate with external contractors, providing technical guidance and ensuring delivery alignment.
  • Implement and support data governance, security controls, and compliance requirements.
  • Produce clear technical and user documentation for cross-functional use.
  • Support and enhance legacy data systems, including SQL Server and T-SQL, as part of ongoing modernization efforts.
  • Stay current with new capabilities across Microsoft Fabric and Azure.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field.
  • Proven experience as a Data Engineer or similar role; insurance or financial services experience is a plus.
  • Strong foundation in data modeling, schema design, data lineage, and data quality management.
  • Experience handling sensitive data (PII/PHI) and applying secure data handling practices.
  • Familiarity with data privacy and regulatory standards such as GDPR, NYDFS, CCPA, or HIPAA.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Collaborative mindset with the ability to adapt to evolving technologies and business needs.

Technical Skills

  • Microsoft Fabric (Dataflows, OneLake, Data Warehouse) and Azure Data Factory
  • Azure SQL, Azure Data Lake Storage, and cloud-based data warehousing
  • Distributed processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark)
  • Data modeling, profiling, cleansing, and validation
  • Data governance, RBAC, and security controls
  • Monitoring, performance tuning, and troubleshooting data pipelines
  • Python and/or PowerShell for automation
  • Git and CI/CD pipelines
  • SQL Server and T-SQL
  • Windows, Linux, or UNIX environments
