Your Role:
As a Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Supervisor, you will oversee the daily production and quality activities of a CDI team, ensuring documentation accuracy, productivity, and compliance with applicable healthcare and coding standards. You will provide leadership, monitor team performance, support process improvements, and work closely with clinical and revenue cycle teams to promote accurate documentation and clean claim generation.
What You'll Do:
Operational Oversight
- Supervise and support CDI team members, including onboarding, scheduling, performance management, coaching, and development.
- Monitor CDI productivity, accuracy, quality, and other operational performance metrics.
- Ensure documentation-related issues are addressed and resolved within required timelines.
- Coordinate team workflows and assignments to support client production and documentation accuracy goals.
Quality & Compliance
- Conduct CDI documentation audits and accuracy reviews as required.
- Ensure documentation practices align with ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS, and applicable CMS/OIG regulations.
- Review documentation and coding-related denials and work with billing and Accounts Receivable teams to identify potential root causes.
- Keep the team informed of relevant documentation, coding, and regulatory updates.
- Maintain and support CDI and coding policies and procedures in line with accepted and compliant practices.
Collaboration & Support
- Present team performance during Operations Meetings, including KPIs, progress, challenges, and areas for improvement.
- Collaborate with HIM, Revenue Integrity, Coding, Billing, and Clinical teams to support accurate documentation and clean claim generation.
- Partner with Revenue Integrity teams to promote coding accuracy and resolve documentation-related concerns.
- Coordinate with IT teams on the optimization of encoder, EHR, CDI, and related healthcare systems.
Education & Training
- Provide ongoing education to CDI specialists covering coding updates, documentation changes, audit findings, and other relevant topics.
- Mentor and coach CDI team members to support their professional development and career growth.
- Share feedback and guidance based on quality reviews, performance trends, and identified knowledge gaps.
Healthcare Provider Coordination
- Collaborate with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to promote timely and accurate clinical documentation that reflects the care provided.
- Obtain appropriate clarification from healthcare providers when documentation requires additional information or clarification.
What You Need:
Non-negotiables
- At least 2 years of inpatient CDI supervisory experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of acute care clinical experience in a hospital setting, with ICU or Med/Surg experience strongly preferred.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree.
- Active Registered Nurse license with PHRN or USRN credentials.
- At least one of the following certifications: CCDS, CDIP, or CCS.
- Working knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS coding, MS-DRG methodology, and risk adjustment.
- Experience using hospital-based Electronic Medical Records (EMR) such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills and strong customer service capabilities, with a CEFR level of at least B2 in both written and verbal English.
Preferred skills/expertise
- Master's degree or additional credential in business, healthcare, or a related field.
- Experience with CDI or coding technology platforms.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, and SharePoint.
- Experience working in a matrixed healthcare environment.
- Experience preparing presentations and communicating operational performance to stakeholders.
