Back End Developer

Core Backend Engineering

• Advanced proficiency in one or more backend languages (e.g. C#/.NET )

• Strong understanding of object-oriented and/or functional design principles

• Design and implementation of scalable, maintainable backend services

• Deep experience with API design (REST, OpenAPI, versioning, backwards

compatibility)

• Strong grasp of error handling, retries, idempotency, and resilience patterns

Cloud Architecture & Azure Platform Expertise

• Expert knowledge of Microsoft Azure PaaS services, including:

o Azure App Service / Container Apps / AKS

o Azure Functions (event-driven and durable patterns)

o Azure Service Bus, Event Grid, Event Hubs

o Azure Storage (Blob, Queue, Table)

Data & Persistence

• Advanced experience with relational databases (e.g. SQL Server, Azure SQL)

including:

o Query optimisation

o Indexing strategies

o Transaction management

• Hands-on experience with NoSQL data stores, particularly Cosmos DB

o Partition strategy design

o Consistency models

• Experience with data access abstraction patterns and ORMs

• Understanding of data integrity, migration, and schema evolution

Security & Compliance Engineering

• Secure API and service design including:

o OAuth2 / OpenID Connect

o Managed identities

• Knowledge of Azure AD / Entra ID integration patterns

• Implementation of role-based access control (RBAC) and least-privilege

principles

• Secure handling of secrets using Azure Key Vault

• Awareness of secure coding practices and enterprise compliance expectations

DevOps, CI/CD & Automation

• Strong experience building and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (e.g. Azure DevOps)

• GitHub actions experience would be beneficial also.

• Infrastructure as Code using Bicep, ARM.

• Automated testing strategies (unit, integration, contract tests)

Engineering Quality & Ways of Working

• Strong test-first and quality-focused mindset

• Participates actively in code reviews and technical discussions

• Comfortable influencing technical standards and best practices

• Works effectively in agile teams and contributes to engineering maturity

Search, Indexing & AI-Augmented Retrieval (Azure AI Search)

A senior backend developer highly proficient in Azure should demonstrate:

• Strong hands-on experience with Azure AI Search (formerly Cognitive Search)

• Design and implementation of search indexes supporting structured,

semi-structured, and unstructured data

• Definition of:

o Index schemas

o Searchable, filterable, facetable, and sortable fields

o Custom analysers and tokenisation strategies

• Implementation of indexers and data sources (e.g. Azure SQL, Blob Storage)
