Role Overview
The AVD Operations Manager will lead the management and optimization of a cloud-based virtual desktop infrastructure environment built on Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). This role is responsible for ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of virtual desktop services while overseeing operational processes and a team responsible for day-to-day infrastructure support.
The position requires deep expertise in Azure technologies, virtualization platforms, and enterprise infrastructure management. The successful candidate will also drive operational improvements, automation initiatives, and cross-team collaboration to ensure a stable and scalable virtual desktop environment.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Operations
- Lead the administration and ongoing operations of Azure Virtual Desktop environments, ensuring stable and secure service delivery.
- Oversee the configuration and management of AVD components, including host pools, session hosts, and workspaces.
- Develop and implement strategies for deployment, scaling, and performance optimization of virtual desktop infrastructure.
- Manage virtual desktop images and scaling strategies to maintain system efficiency and performance.
- Ensure secure access to systems by implementing and maintaining appropriate security policies and controls.
- Support the management of Azure infrastructure components such as virtual networks, network security configurations, and firewall policies.
Monitoring, Optimization and Automation
- Utilize monitoring and diagnostic tools within Azure to track system performance, identify issues, and implement improvements.
- Lead troubleshooting and resolution of complex issues related to virtual desktops, applications, and connectivity
- Introduce automation and process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and reduce manual workload.
- Use virtualization and device management tools to manage and optimize virtual desktop environments.
Collaboration and Governance
- Collaborate with cross-functional technology teams to identify and implement infrastructure improvements.
- Maintain clear and up-to-date documentation covering infrastructure architecture, operational procedures, and support processes.
- Ensure alignment with IT service management practices, including incident, problem, and change management workflows.
- Utilize enterprise ticketing platforms to manage support requests and operational tasks.
Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; equivalent practical experience may be considered.
- 810 years of experience working with virtualization technologies and enterprise infrastructure environments.
- Strong experience administering Microsoft server and desktop environments, including Active Directory in complex multi-domain environments.
- Proficiency in system administration tools and technologies such as Group Policy, PowerShell scripting, DNS, DHCP, and identity services.
- Solid expertise in Windows desktop operating systems and enterprise productivity platforms.
- Hands-on experience managing Azure cloud infrastructure and services.
- Strong knowledge of enterprise networking concepts and connectivity within cloud environments.
- Experience developing and maintaining detailed technical documentation.
- Experience managing software deployment, patching processes, and system lifecycle management.
- Familiarity with security hardening practices for virtual desktop infrastructure.
Preferred
- Experience working with additional virtualization platforms such as Citrix or VMware Horizon.
- Exposure to virtualization management platforms used for optimizing Azure-based desktop environments.
- Experience managing cloud-based device management and virtual desktop services within enterprise environments.
Leadership And Experience
- Demonstrated experience managing and supporting Azure Virtual Desktop environments in a production setting.
- Proven leadership experience overseeing technical teams responsible for infrastructure operations.
- Hands-on experience supporting enterprise network connectivity to Azure environments.
