Staff Accountant — Payroll Tax & State Compliance

About the Role
Marvell HR is a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) delivering full-service HR, payroll, and compliance solutions across multiple states. We are seeking a motivated Staff Accountant looking to grow their career in payroll tax compliance within a fast-paced PEO environment. You'll work closely with our team to support multistate tax filings, state regulatory compliance, and general ledger functions — with mentorship and room to advance.
Core Responsibilities
Multistate Payroll Tax
- Assist in preparing and filing multistate payroll tax returns (quarterly and annual) across all active jurisdictions
- Reconcile payroll tax liabilities and support timely remittance to federal, state, and local agencies
- Help track and respond to tax notices and correspondence from state agencies
- Monitor payroll tax deadlines and maintain a filing calendar across multiple states
- Coordinate with payroll systems to verify accurate tax withholdings and reporting
PEO & State Regulatory Compliance
- Support compliance with PEO-specific regulations across all states of operation
- Help maintain records of state registrations, SUI accounts, and employer accounts
- Assist in tracking state reporting requirements and deadlines for the PEO and its clients
- Work with legal counsel and senior team members to implement regulatory changes as needed
- Help prepare documentation for state audits and regulatory inquiries
General Ledger & Financial Operations
- Support month-end close including journal entries and account reconciliations
- Reconcile payroll-related balance sheet accounts such as accrued wages, tax liabilities, and benefit withholdings
- Maintain organized and audit-ready documentation for all payroll tax and GL activity
- Assist with internal reporting and audit support as needed
Systems & Collaboration
- Work with payroll and HR platforms to ensure accurate tax data, reporting, and filing support
- Collaborate with HR, operations, and client service teams to resolve payroll-related questions
- Support process improvement initiatives to strengthen compliance workflows
Qualifications
Required
- 5-10 years of accounting or payroll tax experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Basic understanding of payroll tax concepts (federal, state, local)
- Experience with GL reconciliations or month-end close support
- Proficiency in Excel / Google Sheets
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage deadlines
Preferred
- Exposure to multistate payroll tax or employer registrations
- Experience with payroll platforms (Paylocity, Paychex, Prism, or similar)
- Familiarity with a PEO, staffing, or HR services environment
