The Corporate Controller role is a critical position that will encompass comprehensive financial oversight and accounting management to ensure the company's financial health. This role is responsible for the core operational aspects of accounting, financial reporting, internal control, and regulatory compliance. This role requires a hands-on and highly engaged leader who takes an active role in the design, implementation, and continuous enhancements of accounting policies, procedures, and systems. This individual must be able to lead by example while at the same time delegating effectively, motivating, and bringing the best out of their team
Responsibilities
Accounting, Reporting, and Compliance
- Responsible for maintaining and improving the virtual monthly, quarterly, and annual close and reporting with accuracy and efficiency; ensure 100% backup for critical work within the Accounting team
- Establish and maintain accounting policies, leading practices, and procedures to ensure US GAAP compliance at scale and high accounting quality. Provide non-finance management with ongoing education and updates
- Ensure overall corporate controllership policies are aligned and in compliance with local, state, and federal requirements
- Reconciled balances and maintained accurate records of revenue and expenses related to multiple intercompany accounts
- Track and allocate expenses based on the specific requirements of each entity
- Stay up-to-date with changes in regulations and accounting standards of accounting
- Drive accounting positions of unusual and/or high judgment items and prepare organization for impact, including GAAP/non-GAAP, subsequent events, and new pronouncements
- Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls
- Own the chart of accounts. Anticipate the reporting needs of functional leadership. Realign accounts as necessary to ensure a smooth transition to the new ERP system
- Manage the general ledger, technical accounting and policy, consolidations, reporting, and financial transaction teams
- Maintains schedules for sub-ledgers such as capital projects, fixed assets, prepaid expenses, and deferral and recognition of revenue, service contracts, and commissions
- Drive scale of financial transaction teams, including AP, T&E, payrol,l and ensure income tax compliance, as applicable
- Manages collection and payment of sales & use tax, including reconciliation between Avalara and the General Ledger
- Oversees timely payment of property taxes and submission of property tax returns. Interfaces with external resources on state, federal, and other taxes
- Responsible for commissions calculation
- Responsible for optimizing commercial insurance coverage and policy cost
- Implement accounting KPIs and measure performance against prior periods and industry standards for DSO, DPO, ROA, ROI, etc
- Manage service level agreements for accounting transaction services (T&E, AP, Payroll)
- Partner effectively across functions to drive improved controls and institutionalize process flow directly impacting accounting integrity, including revenue recognition, revenue match programs, conditional sales, returns, and partner spiffs
- Demonstrate strong business judgment applied to routine and complex financial and accounting issues
- Prepare comprehensive financial reports for management and the Board of Directors, providing accurate and timely information on the organization's financial performance
- Produces cash flow forecasts and walkthroughs between raw data and reported results
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement
- Work closely with the financial planning and analysis team on reporting efforts and monthly accruals related to budgeting and forecasting
- Establish a material acquisition forecast with Purchasing
- Oversaw 1099 data collection and preparation
- Perform ad hoc projects as necessary or assigned
Audit and Compliance Management
- Ensure compliance with relevant accounting standards, regulations, and reporting requirements
- Oversee and optimize internal controls to ensure SOX compliance and coordinate with external auditors as it relates to controls testing and evaluation of exceptions
- Manage bank examination and annual audit process by external independent auditors, and prepare financial documentation and support audit
- Implement corrective measures and recommendations resulting from audits and internal control assessments
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with auditors
Team Leadership and Collaboration
- Lead and manage a team of finance professionals, providing guidance, coaching, and professional development opportunities
- Foster a collaborative work environment that promotes open communication and knowledge sharing
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide financial insights and support decision-making
Qualifications
- The successful candidate will have 8-10+ years of experience as a Corporate Controller who has worked in both private and public company environments
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance and licensed CPA; MBA preferred
- Extensive experience with software and hardware revenue recognition and stock equity expensing and administration
- Hands-on experience with transactional teams, including AP, T&E, and Payroll, including establishing service level agreements and building the monitoring tools
- Proven international experience working with overseas financial operations (consolidation, compliance, reporting), and proven ability to handle financial accounting and reporting duties
- Experience in FP&A and forecasting tools, in particular, the ability to partner and provide necessary information to FP&A partners for appropriate forecasting
- Experienced at collaborating with business leaders and working across functional areas to articulate financial priorities and influence decisions to improve financial results
- Excellent planning, analysis, and execution skills, accompanied by proficiency with various software applications
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Adept at prioritization, responsiveness, and understanding a sense of urgency
- Proven success in developing and leading a high-performing team using a collaborative management style
- Willingness to do whatever it takes for the department to run effectively
- Proficient in accounting software, advanced Excel and/or Google Sheets or similar software
- Big Four public accounting experience and ERP implementation experience preferred
- SaaS company background is a plus
