Job description (heading)

The Accounting Manager will lead:

  • Financial Accounting & Reporting- for local and group reporting.

  • Finance Initiatives- Finance transformation projects, automation, and system enhancements

  • People Development- Leading, mentoring, and developing the FA&R team

  • Administrative & Governance Functions- Regulatory compliance, documentation, and stakeholder management.

Responsibilities (heading)

  • Local & CIFRS Closing: Oversee local and CIFRS closing process.

  • Financial Close Excellence: Lead the end-to-end financial closing process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all reporting standards

  • Group Reporting & Deliverables: Direct group consolidation and reporting activities, effectively communicating financial results and leading the preparation of all required deliverables, serving as the primary relationship manager to the Parent Company, House of Investments.

  • Process Improvement Initiatives: Champion faster close initiatives and continuous improvement projects for SLGFI & HoldCo accounting operations.

Manage General & Insurance Accounting

  • Technical Accounting: Ensure consistent application of accounting principles for Company transactions.

  • Process & Controls Framework: Develop, implement, and maintain robust accounting processes and internal controls to mitigate financial risks and drive operational efficiency.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as the primary financial reporting liaison across Finance, Tax, Actuarial, Asset Liability Management (ALM), Investments, and Operations, ensuring accurate treatment and financial statement representation of accounting transactions.

  • Systems Leadership: Lead and manage systems implementations and enhancements impacting accounting processes and reporting.

Manage Company Initiatives

  • Finance Transformation: Drive company-wide initiatives focused on automation, digital innovation, and systems enhancements related to insurance accounting and broader Finance operations.

  • Strategic Support: Provide leadership and expertise for other Finance initiatives and organizational priorities, as needed.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Talent Development: Mentor and develop the Financial Accounting & Reporting (FA&R) team, building technical expertise in industry-specific accounting practices.

  • Culture Building: Foster a culture of integrity, continuous improvement, accountability, and BOLDER behaviors across the team.

  • Performance Management: Set clear expectations, provide regular coaching, and ensure team capability to meet evolving business needs.

Administrative Functions & Governance

  • Documentation & Compliance: Lead process and control documentation efforts, including organizing and maintaining comprehensive filing systems for all IC and SEC submissions (both hard copy and digital formats).

  • Stakeholder Management: Manage and respond to inquiries from internal stakeholders, external auditors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Management Support: Address Finance and broader management requirements in a timely and professional manner.

Qualifications (heading)

Technical Accounting Expertise

  • IFRS/CIFRS: Expertise in International Financial Reporting Standards, particularly IFRS 17 (Insurance Contracts) and IFRS 9 (Financial Instruments)

  • Group Reporting & Consolidation: Understanding of consolidation principles and group reporting requirements for multi-entity structures

  • Regulatory Reporting: Knowledge of Insurance Commission (IC) and Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing requirements and compliance

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Financial Close Process: Ability to manage end-to-end financial closing cycles with focus on accuracy and timeliness

  • Management Reporting: Skills in preparing and presenting financial information to various stakeholder levels

  • Process Optimization: Experience with faster close initiatives and process improvement methodologies

  • Internal Controls: Knowledge of SOX compliance, internal control frameworks (COSO), and risk mitigation strategies

Systems & Technology

  • Financial Systems Implementation: Experience managing ERP/financial systems implementations and enhancements

  • Automation & Digital Transformation: Ability to identify and lead automation opportunities to improve efficiency

  • Data Analytics: Proficiency in analyzing financial data and identifying trends or anomalies

  • Systems Integration: Understanding how various systems (accounting, actuarial, ALM) interconnect and impact financial reporting

Audit & Compliance

  • External Audit Management: Experience coordinating with external auditors and managing audit processes

  • Internal Audit Support: Ability to respond to and implement internal audit findings

  • Regulatory Interactions: Skills in managing inquiries and communications with regulatory bodies

  • Documentation & Controls: Expertise in maintaining comprehensive audit trails and control documentation

Project Management

  • Initiative Leadership: Proven track record of leading company-wide initiatives from conception to completion

  • Change Management: Ability to manage organizational change and drive adoption of new processes or systems

  • Prioritization: Skills in managing multiple priorities and meeting competing deadlines.

Education and experience

  • CPA/Professional Certification: Certified Public Accountant or equivalent professional accounting designation

  • Educational Background: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

  • Industry Experience: 8-10+ years of progressive experience in insurance accounting and financial reporting

  • Management Experience: 3-5+ years of people management and team leadership experience

Communication scope

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Stakeholder Management: Ability to serve as liaison between Finance, Tax, Actuarial, ALM, Investments, and Operations teams (and interface with Regulators)

  • Regional & Corporate Interface: Experience managing relationships with regional and corporate finance functions

  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication abilities to explain complex accounting matters to non-finance stakeholders

Leadership & People Development

  • Team Management: Proven ability to lead, mentor, and develop accounting professionals
