CLIENT BACKGROUND
A New York-based tax-focused firm committed to delivering high-quality, proactive service by optimizing tax returns and identifying strategic opportunities for clients. Their approach emphasizes strong documentation practices, audit risk mitigation, and maximizing tax savings.
They primarily serve a diverse portfolio of advanced and real estate-centric clients, including medical practices, dentists, engineers, and other professional service providers. Most engagements involve partnerships for real estate and passive investments, as well as active businesses structured as S-Corporations and, occasionally, C-Corporations.
The firm values professionals who can see the big picture and produce accurate, efficient tax work while supporting clients across a variety of entities and industries.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and review complex individual, partnership, and corporate tax returns—especially those involving real estate, multi-entity structures, and advanced tax topics (e.g., cost segregations, 1031 exchanges, installment sales, passive activity rules).
- Proactively identify missing information, manage recurring vs. new tasks, and prioritize workloads to meet deadlines and budget expectations.
- Communicate open items accurately and coordinate with senior accountants, project managers, admin teams, and clients to keep work moving.
- Maintain accuracy and continuity by avoiding duplicate document requests, resolving book/tax mismatches, and preparing well-documented workpapers—particularly for real estate transactions.
- Support additional compliance needs (write-up, 1099s, payroll, sales tax) and work efficiently within flat-fee arrangements using tools such as QuickBooks Online and Desktop, Xero, and UltraTax.
- Participate in client-facing meetings and clearly explain complex tax matters in a way that fits each client's situation. (This will be introduced gradually as you obtain full familiarity with the processes and workflows.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- At least 5 years of hands-on U.S. tax experience and must have exposure to the real estate industry and professional services.
- Strong expertise in entity tax returns, particularly S Corps and partnerships, including multi-entity and multi-property structures (e.g., holding companies with multiple single-member LLC subsidiaries, K-1 reporting, and related compliance).
- Experience handling complex partnership tax work and layered entity structures.
- Proficiency in UltraTax (non-negotiable).
- Strong Excel skills.
- Ability to work within US Eastern Time (10:00 AM to 7:00 PM ET, with 1-hour lunch break).
- Excellent communication skills, responsiveness, and ability to work under tight deadlines.
- CPA preferred; non-CPAs with strong U.S. tax experience will be considered.
- Familiarity with QuickBooks (Online and Desktop) and Xero
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE / ADVANTAGEOUS
- Experience in real estate taxation, including cost segregation (with/without Form 3115), syndicated partnership tax returns, 704(b), installment sales, 1031 exchanges, short-term rentals, passive activity loss rules (including real estate professional criteria), and partial asset dispositions.
- Exposure to syndications, lower-tier partnerships, and highly complex real estate structures.
- Experience in high-volume or busy season extension work.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Personal equipment (laptop or desktop computer)
- Reliable, stable and high-speed internet
- A dedicated, private workspace that is free from distractions, ensuring confidentiality and optimal focus on tasks.
DESCRIPTION OF IDEAL CANDIDATE
- Proactive, detail-oriented, and highly organized - able to stay ahead of missing items, track recurring and new tasks, prioritize deadlines effectively, and avoid duplicate or inconsistent requests.
- A fast learner and self-starter who takes initiative, reviews past work, consults available resources before raising questions, and troubleshoots book-to-tax issues before escalating.
- Efficient and tech-savvy - comfortable with understanding of various technological tools, systems and trends and working within flat-fee and time-budget constraints.
- Professional, ethical, reliable, and collaborative - builds strong relationships with clients and staff, maintains high accuracy standards, and contributes positively to a client-service-driven environment.
- Strong Communicator - You communicate professionally and clearly with both internal team members and clients while proactively addressing concerns and follow-ups.
