**This is a full-time independent contractor role. Candidates must be able to commit exclusively to this position and not engage in part-time or freelance work once hired.**

We are seeking a Senior Tax Accountant with strong technical tax expertise and review experience across multiple entity types. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced public accounting environment, values accuracy and accountability, and enjoys being part of a collaborative, long-term team.

Our firm specializes in tax preparation, small business accounting, and estate and trust administration. The ideal candidate will bring a strong foundation in individual and business taxation, with additional experience in fiduciary taxation and tax notice resolution viewed very favorably.

CLIENT BACKGROUND

We are a growing Certified Public Accounting firm based in Monterey, California, serving individuals and small businesses across tax, accounting, and trust administration services.

Our firm focuses heavily on relationship-driven client service. We are known for being responsive, proactive, and detail-oriented. Internally, we value teamwork, reliability, clear communication, and continuous improvement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare and review U.S. tax returns, including: Individual (Form 1040), Partnership (Form 1065), S Corporation (Form 1120S) Corporation (Form 1120) Fiduciary/Trust Returns (Form 1041)
  • Review returns prepared by staff for accuracy, completeness, and tax-saving opportunities
  • Research federal and California tax issues and apply findings appropriately
  • Prepare tax projections and assist with proactive tax planning strategies
  • Review and respond to IRS and state tax notices
  • Work directly with clients to gather information, resolve issues, and answer tax-related questions
  • Manage workflow and deadlines using Lacerte Tax Software and Canopy Practice Management Software
  • Identify process improvements and help maintain high-quality standards across engagements
  • Stay current on evolving federal and California tax laws and compliance requirements

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of U.S. public accounting tax experience required
  • Strong experience reviewing and preparing: Forms 1040, 1065, 1120S, and 1120
  • Experience reviewing multi-state and California tax filings required
  • Experience handling IRS and state tax notices required
  • Fiduciary/trust tax return experience (Form 1041) strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of federal and California tax compliance and regulations
  • Tax planning and projection experience required
  • Experience reviewing staff workpapers and returns preferred
  • Proficiency with Lacerte Tax Software required
  • Experience with Canopy or similar practice management systems preferred
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Highly detail-oriented, dependable, and capable of working independently
  • Comfortable working during Pacific Time business hours
