CLIENT BACKGROUND

Our client provides accounting solutions for growing software startups, helping SaaS companies streamline their books and access decision-ready insights quickly. They focus on fast and accurate month-end closes, reconciliations, financial statements, and SaaS-specific needs such as revenue recognition and deferred revenue. Their approach emphasizes timely, reliable financials, automation, and accuracy, making them a trusted partner for finance leaders and startup teams.

Unlike traditional firms that only appear during tax season, our client acts as a year-round partner with a startup mindset, combining precision with adaptability. They leverage tools like Xero, Stripe, and Google Sheets to build efficient processes that save time and reduce errors. With over a decade of experience in accounting and finance at high-growth startups, their founder is committed not only to client success but also to developing a resilient, growth-minded team of accountants.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Own the end-to-end accounting and month-end close for assigned clients, including bookkeeping, reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, workpapers, schedules, financial statements, and other close-related activities.
  • Manage an assigned client portfolio with increasing independence, with the goal of taking ownership of approximately four complex clients from start to finish, while the Team Lead primarily provides final review.
  • Perform first-level reviews of junior team members work, including entries, reconciliations, workpapers, and supporting documentation; identify errors or missing information and provide clear, constructive feedback.
  • Perform flux and variance analysis to identify and explain significant month-over-month movements and ensure financial reporting is accurate and complete.
  • Maintain organized, consistent, and review-ready workpapers and help document and improve recurring processes, checklists, and SOPs to support effective delegation and team efficiency.
  • Support accounting for recurring-revenue and startup clients, including revenue recognition, deferred revenue, prepaid expenses, and other accrual accounting requirements, and research relevant US GAAP guidance when unusual transactions arise.
  • Support additional accounting and operational requirements as needed, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing operations, sales tax, and 1099-related work.
  • Contribute to process improvement and internal projects, including workflow standardization, data migrations, implementation of new tools, reporting improvements, automations, and other initiatives that improve accuracy and efficiency.
  • Collaborate closely with the Team Lead and junior team members, remaining willing to perform hands-on accounting work at all levels when needed, particularly during onboarding, client transitions, and busy close periods.
  • Participate in client-facing communication as responsibilities grow, including joining calls, responding to accounting-related questions, and clearly explaining financial information and outstanding items.
  • Take on increasing leadership responsibilities over time, with the opportunity to eventually lead a client pod and oversee junior team members as the team grows.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field
  • At least 4 years of US accounting experience within a US accounting firm, with strong hands-on experience in full-cycle accounting, month-end close, reconciliations, workpapers, and financial reporting
  • Strong knowledge of accrual accounting and US GAAP, including experience with revenue recognition, deferred revenue, prepaid expenses, or similar accounting areas
  • Experience supporting SaaS, startup, subscription-based, or other recurring-revenue businesses is highly preferred; candidates with comparable experience in complex or high-growth environments will also be considered
  • Experience reviewing the work of junior accountants, mentoring team members, or taking on lead responsibilities, with the potential to grow into a Team Lead / Pod Lead role
  • Experience with Xero is preferred, but strong candidates who can quickly learn the platform will be considered; NetSuite experience is an advantage but not required
  • Strong written and verbal English communication skills, with the confidence to participate in client-facing calls and discussions
  • Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and ownership skills, with the ability to work independently, navigate incomplete information, and recognize when issues need to be escalated
  • Adaptable and committed to continuous learning, with the ability to quickly learn new accounting systems, tools, processes, and ways of working
  • Open to coaching and direct feedback, with the maturity to receive constructive criticism, learn from mistakes, and continuously improve
  • Comfortable working within an established team structure and reporting to a Filipino Team Lead, regardless of previous seniority or title

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Reliable, stable, and high-speed internet connection
  • Reliable backup internet connection and backup power solution suitable for remote work
  • Dedicated and private workspace free from distractions, ensuring confidentiality and focus
  • Ability to maintain approximately four hours of daily overlap with the team
  • Willingness to occasionally work later hours during busy month-end close periods, particularly during the first or second week of the close cycle
  • Flexibility to occasionally work additional hours or weekends when necessary to complete time-sensitive close responsibilities

SOFT SKILLS

  • Accountable: Takes ownership of responsibilities, follows through on commitments, and ensures work is completed accurately and on time
  • Adaptable: Comfortable working in a startup environment where priorities, information, and processes may evolve
  • Coachability: Receptive to direct feedback, willing to acknowledge mistakes, and focused on applying feedback and moving forward
  • Communication: Communicates clearly, confidently, and professionally with teammates and clients

  • Leadership: Comfortable supporting and guiding junior team members, with the potential and interest to take on greater leadership responsibilities
  • Problem-solving: Able to investigate issues, work through incomplete information, and develop practical solutions independently
  • Proactive: Identifies what needs to be done, asks the right questions, and takes action without requiring constant direction
