Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of recent U.S. residential mortgage underwriting experience, specializing in conventional first trust deed loans and appraisal review
  • Proven experience evaluating credit, income, assets, collateral, and compliance with underwriting guidelines
  • Hands-on experience with Encompass Loan Origination System (LOS)
  • Strong proficiency in Desktop Underwriter (DU) and Loan Product Advisor (LPA/LP), including findings review and automated underwriting recommendations
  • Strong knowledge of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures
  • At least 1 year of experience in a paperless mortgage or loan-processing environment
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and underwriting judgment skills, with exceptional attention to detail
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time-management skills for managing multiple loan files and deadlines
  • Self-directed and accountable, with the ability to perform accurately and independently in a fast-paced, high-pressure mortgage environment

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite new loan submissions, issuing approvals, declines, suspensions, or counteroffers based on established guidelines.
  • Review loan conditions and issue final approvals before funding within required turnaround times.
  • Validate loan applications and documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with secondary market, investor, and company guidelines.
  • Provide underwriting guidance and technical support to production teams.
  • Partner with Account Management and Funding teams to resolve complex issues, restructure loans, and meet lock expirations and critical deadlines.
  • Resolve Quality Control, Quality Assurance, and Post-Closing audit findings accurately and promptly.
  • Support internal and external customers in line with established service level agreements (SLAs).
  • Provide additional underwriting, team, and management support as required.
