Job Description
The
Underwriting Sub-lead is responsible for leading and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the underwriting team across both General Insurance (GI) and Life underwriting.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Lead Underwriting Operations
Oversee the day-to-day underwriting operations, ensuring timely, accurate, and consistent processing of insurance applications in accordance with underwriting guidelines and service level agreements (SLAs).
Manage underwriting work queues, prioritize workloads, and allocate tasks to optimize productivity and operational efficiency.
Monitor underwriting quality, turnaround times, and operational performance, implementing corrective actions where necessary.
- Provide Technical Underwriting Leadership
Review and recommend decisions on complex underwriting referrals, exceptions, claims-related underwriting referrals, and non-standard risks within delegated authority.
Validate underwriting decisions involving premiums, benefits, policy limits, deductibles, exclusions, and other underwriting parameters to ensure alignment with the Company's risk appetite and underwriting philosophy.
Serve as the technical escalation point and provide guidance to underwriters on complex underwriting matters.
- Drive Process, Systems, and Product Improvements
Identify and recommend process improvements to enhance underwriting efficiency, quality, and customer experience.
Develop and maintain underwriting manuals, standard operating procedures (SOPs), underwriting rules, and business requirements for system enhancements.
Coordinate User Acceptance Testing, validate system and product configurations, and ensure operational readiness for new product launches and underwriting enhancements.
- Ensure Operational Governance and Compliance
Ensure underwriting activities comply with internal policies, underwriting guidelines, regulatory requirements, and audit standards.
Prepare management reports, monitor operational KPIs, and analyze underwriting trends to support performance management and decision-making.
Support internal audits, regulatory reviews, and partner escalations by preparing responses, gathering documentation, and providing technical case analyses.
- Collaborate with Cross-Functional Stakeholders
Partner with Product, Commercial, Operations, Technology, Claims, and other business units to support product implementation, underwriting enhancements, and operational initiatives.
Provide underwriting expertise during product development, system changes, and strategic projects to ensure seamless implementation and operational effectiveness.
Provide technical leadership, coaching, and mentorship to junior underwriters to promote consistent underwriting practices and continuous professional development.
Foster knowledge sharing, uphold underwriting standards, and contribute to a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree
- At least 3-6 years of experience in Underwriting
- Good analytical, risk assessment, and decision-making skills
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills
- Underwriting certification/exam is an advantage
- Strong Leadership Skills with experience in supervising a team
