Job Summary:
As an Underwriting Associate I, you are a core member of the Policy Binding and Operations team the engine behind every new business bind. Your role centers on high-volume policy binding execution, research verification, and producer/agent communication across all workers compensation bind types. Operating within a cross-trained, queue-based model, you work across multiple active queues to ensure policies are bound accurately, within Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and in compliance with underwriting guidelines. You collaborate closely with Underwriting, Business Development, and Customer Service to maintain policy protection and bind quality.
Key responsibilities
Policy Binding & Research:
- Process instant bind policies including abbreviated and full research verification (loss history review, bureau site verification, coverage site checks, due diligence items per Standard Operating Procedure (SOP))
- Execute new business fast track quotes meeting eligibility criteria through standardized rapid processing
- Finalize binding on policies quoted by Underwriting, including contact verification, officer election, required forms review, schedule modification worksheet, and loss control requirements
- Conduct research across bureau sites and coverage sites to verify policy information and flag potential risk issues or state-specific requirements
- Process quote revision requests, modifying quotes in pricing tools and communicating updates to producers/agents
- Order loss control services for accounts meeting loss control requirements and track completion status
Case Management & Processing:
- Process officer inclusion/exclusion correction endorsements
- Manage bind follow-ups outreach to producers/agents for missing documentation or information needed to complete binding
- Route, organize, and manage cases, including associating business opportunities and updating case type/subtype per defined standards
- Process low premium referral quotes, marking cases for auto-quote or auto-decline based on established criteria
- Process partner-specific data/email requests, updating case fields and assigning appropriate case type/subtype
- Process midterm Broker of Record requests, including cancel/rewrite execution
Documentation & Communication:
- Communicate with producers and brokers regarding bind status, missing documentation, and policy questions
- Escalate items requiring Underwriting Authority/Approval (LOA-required) to Underwriting per established escalation paths
- Coordinate with Business Development on rush case processing
- Provide support for specific, extended coverage or payroll partner processes
- Maintain accurate case documentation in the designated CRM/Case Management system
Qualifications & Desired Skills
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required; associate's degree or two to four years of practical experience in insurance operations, policy processing, or related fields is a plus
- Previous experience in workers compensation policy binding or underwriting support is highly desirable
- Familiarity with workers compensation policies, regulations, and bureau/coverage site research processes is a plus
- Proficiency in a CRM system and comfort navigating multiple systems simultaneously is a plus
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail are essential
- Ability to manage high-volume workloads across multiple queues while maintaining quality and SLA adherence
- Ability to work across time zones to cover team coverage model
- Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset
