Job Summary

The Indirect Taxes Team Leader is responsible for leading and overseeing a team handling U.S. and Canadian indirect tax compliance, including excise tax, sales and use tax, and motor fuel tax. This role serves as the first level of review, ensures service delivery excellence, and collaborates closely with the U.S. tax team to meet compliance, SLA, and KPI requirements.


Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership & Oversight

  • Lead and manage a team of 8-10 tax professionals in a shared services environment

  • Ensure daily operations run smoothly and deliverables are completed on time

  • Support team development through coaching, training, and performance management

Indirect Tax Compliance Review

  • Act as first-level reviewer for excise tax, sales and use tax, and motor fuel tax returns

  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, and on-time filing across multiple U.S. and Canadian jurisdictions

  • Ensure compliance with internal controls, KPIs, and SLAs

Accounting & Reconciliation Review

  • Review journal entries related to tax filings, payments, and reconciliations

  • Review tax account reconciliations and monitor open or reconciling items

Tax Payments & Documentation

  • Review tax payments prior to release

  • Ensure proper documentation and compliance with documentation and retention standards

Audit, Notices & Stakeholder Support

  • Oversee tax notice management and resolution with U.S. taxing authorities

  • Review vendor exemption certificates for accuracy and compliance

  • Provide audit support by reviewing working papers and explaining tax processes

Process Improvement & Governance

  • Identify opportunities to improve tax processes and operational efficiency

  • Support automation, transition, and migration initiatives

  • Ensure process documentation is up to date and aligned with group standards and core process models


Work Environment

  • Fast-paced, highly structured, and performance-driven environment

  • Frequent interaction with internal and external global stakeholders

  • Role requires strong leadership and hands-on involvement in operations


Qualifications & Requirements

  • At least 5 years of experience in a Shared Services Center or BPO, with strong exposure to Indirect Tax activities

  • Proven leadership experience managing teams in a shared services environment

  • Strong experience with SAP and tax systems

  • Transition or migration experience is highly preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field CPA is an advantage

  • Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodology is a plus
