Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Structural Engineer with at least 5 years of professional experience to join a small architectural firm supporting custom residential and small commercial projects. This role will work closely with a single architect and will be responsible for producing structural designs and drawings independently.

The ideal candidate has strong experience with wood-frame construction, exposure to steel structural elements, and the ability to take projects from concept through completed construction documents. Most projects are located in California, so experience with California codes and permitting requirements is a plus, though not required. Candidate location is flexible.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare structural calculations, layouts, and construction documents for custom residential and small commercial projects.
  • Produce and manage structural drawings independently in Revit and AutoCAD.
  • Design wood-frame structural systems, including foundations, walls, floors, and roof framing.
  • Coordinate steel components and connections where required.
  • Collaborate directly with the architect to develop practical, code-compliant structural solutions.
  • Review architectural drawings and provide structural input during design development.
  • Coordinate with consultants, contractors, and other project stakeholders as needed.
  • Revise drawings and calculations in response to client comments, permitting comments, and field conditions.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and adhere to project schedules.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with a structural emphasis or related engineering discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years of structural engineering experience in residential and/or small commercial projects.
  • Proficiency in Revit and AutoCAD is required.
  • Demonstrated experience producing your own structural drawings without drafting support.
  • Strong knowledge of wood-frame construction and familiarity with steel framing and detailing.
  • Understanding of structural design principles, building codes, and construction practices.
  • Ability to work independently in a small-firm environment.
  • Strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with projects located in California.
  • Familiarity with California Building Code (CBC), seismic design requirements, and local permitting processes.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or progress toward licensure is an advantage.
