Job Description
We are looking for a Playground & Play Space Designer to create custom playground and outdoor play environments for parks, schools, municipalities, and other public works and private clients. You'll take a project from concept to detailed 2D/3D image - translating site conditions, budgets, and safety requirements into layouts and renderings that help clients visualize their finished play space before a single piece of equipment is installed.
What You'll Do
- Design 2D playground layouts and site plans using AutoCAD and our proprietary playground design software, incorporating equipment placement, use zones, fall/safety surfacing, pathways, and ADA-accessible routes.
- Build photorealistic 3D renderings and walkthroughs in Lumion or 3DS Max to support client presentations and sales proposals.
- Create and maintain 2D and 3D designs in our system, including equipment libraries, catalog components, and layouts.
- Partner with inside and outside sales team members to understand client goals, site constraints, budget, and translate them into design concepts.
- Ensure all designs meet applicable safety and accessibility standards, including ASTM F1487, CPSC playground safety guidelines, and ADA accessibility requirements (training provided).
- Revise and iterate designs based on client feedback, internal review, and site survey data.
- Coordinate with sales team to ensure design accuracy and buildability.
- Maintain organized design files and contribute to internal design standards and templates.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D site plans and layout drawings.
- Experience with Lumion or comparable 3D rendering/visualization software.
- Working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop for rendering touch-ups, presentation boards, and marketing graphics.
- Strong 2D and 3D design skills with an eye for spatial layout, scale, and composition.
- Willingness and ability to learn our proprietary playground design software (training provided).
- Willingness to learn and pass a Certified Playground Safety (CPSI) Inspector Course (online).
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, especially with dimensions, safety zones, and specifications.
- Clear communication skills for presenting design concepts to clients and internal teams.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- A portfolio demonstrating relevant 2D/3D design work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Degree or coursework in landscape architecture, industrial design, architecture, interior design, or a related field - or equivalent professional experience.
- Prior experience in playground, recreation, landscape, or outdoor equipment design.
- Familiarity with playground safety standards (ASTM F1487, CPSC handbook) and ADA/accessibility guidelines for play areas (training available).
- Experience with additional design or graphics tools such as Adobe Illustrator, SketchUp, Revit, or 3ds Max.
- Experience working with public works/municipal bid or procurement processes.
