Role Summary:

As a Tier 3 Wireless Network Engineer, you are the senior wireless escalation point for our managed services customers. You lead enterprise WLAN design, RF optimization, and complex troubleshooting across multi-vendor environments, owning issues from controller and access point behavior down to the RF layer. Wireless is the core of this role, supported by a working command of routing, switching, and firewall fundamentals.

Responsibilities:

  • Wireless Escalation Resolution: Own Tier 2 wireless escalations through to resolution, covering controller, access point, and RF-layer incidents on enterprise WLANs, with timely and effective handling of critical issues.
  • Advanced Wireless Changes: Perform Level 2 to 3 wireless change requests, including WLAN and SSID provisioning, controller and access point configuration, RF profile tuning, and firmware upgrades, while adhering to change management processes.
  • Wireless Design and Architecture: Lead wireless design initiatives, including capacity and high-density planning, channel and power planning, and roaming architecture across campus and branch sites, collaborating with cross-functional teams.
  • RF Planning and Site Surveys: Conduct predictive, passive, and active site surveys, produce heat maps, and validate coverage, capacity, and signal quality against design targets.
  • Spectrum and RF Optimization: Analyze the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands and manage channel width, DFS, transmit power and EIRP, co-channel and adjacent-channel interference, and band steering to optimize performance.
  • Wireless Security: Address WLAN security escalations, conduct wireless vulnerability assessments, and recommend and implement secure deployment models using 802.1X, WPA3-Enterprise, RADIUS integration, and segmentation.
  • Network and Security Installations: Oversee wireless and supporting network and security infrastructure installations, ensuring adherence to best practices and industry standards.
  • Technical Project Management: Lead wireless and related technical projects, coordinating resources, managing timelines, and ensuring successful project delivery.
  • Documentation and Knowledge Sharing: Maintain comprehensive documentation of wireless designs, RF survey results, and configurations, and actively share knowledge with team members.
  • Team Knowledge Base: Maintain the team's wireless knowledge base to improve overall performance and skills, including updating documentation, organizing training sessions, and promoting knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Customer Ticket Updates: Provide regular updates to customers regarding the status and progress of their tickets.
  • Network Maintenance: Attend network maintenance activities during or off business hours as required.

Wireless Platform Expertise:

Required, hands-on:

  • Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers: Catalyst 9800 (IOS-XE) and AireOS, including WLAN and policy profiles, FlexConnect, mobility and roaming, and Radio Resource Management (RRM).
  • Cisco Meraki: Cloud-managed MR access points, Dashboard administration, RF profiles, and configuration templates.
  • Aruba: ArubaOS controllers, Aruba Central, and Instant (IAP), including AP groups, Adaptive Radio Management (ARM), and ClientMatch.

A strong plus:

  • Fortinet FortiAP: FortiGate-managed and FortiAP Cloud deployments.
  • Juniper Mist: Mist AI access points and Mist cloud management.

Wireless and RF Competencies:

  • Spectrum: Working command of the 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz bands, including band characteristics, channel planning, channel width, and DFS.
  • Radio Power and Propagation: Transmit power ranges, EIRP, antenna gain (dBi), free-space path loss, and the effect of power settings on cell size and roaming.
  • Signal Measurement: Interpreting and tuning to dBm signal levels, RSSI, SNR, and the noise floor to meet coverage and capacity targets.
  • Interference Management: Identifying and mitigating co-channel and adjacent-channel interference and non-Wi-Fi sources through spectrum analysis.
  • Standards and Performance: 802.11a/b/g/n/ac, 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6 and 6E), and 802.11be (Wi-Fi 7), high-density design, and roaming optimization with 802.11k/v/r.
