Job Description
The Senior Software Programmer (SME) for Process Automation & Process Instrumentation serves as the organization's technical leader for industrial process control, instrumentation, automation systems, and digital transformation initiatives.
The SME provides engineering expertise, solution architecture guidance, technical leadership, and customer-facing support across the lifecycle of process automation projects, from conceptual design through commissioning, optimization, and lifecycle services.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership
- Act as the primary technical expert for Process Automation and Process Instrumentation solutions.
- Provide technical guidance on DCS, PLC, SCADA, HMI, Safety Systems (SIS), and field instrumentation.
- Develop and review automation architectures, control philosophies, functional specifications, and instrument design packages.
- Standardize engineering practices and recommend best-in-class automation technologies
Process Automation Solutions
- Design and validate automation solutions for industries such as Water & Wastewater, Oil & Gas, Power, Mining, Food & Beverage, and Life Sciences.
- Support deployment of control systems such as:
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS)
- Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
- SCADA Systems
- Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
- Industrial Communication Networks
- Provide expertise in software-defined automation and digitalization initiatives
Process Instrumentation Expertise
- Select and specify instrumentation including:
- Pressure Transmitters
- Flowmeters (Magnetic, Coriolis, Vortex)
- Level Measurement Devices (Radar, Guided Wave Radar, Displacer)
- Temperature Sensors
- Analytical Instruments
- Control Valves and Positioners
- Ensure proper application, sizing, calibration, and integration of field devices into automation systems
Project Execution Support
- Review P&IDs, control narratives, loop diagrams, cause & effect matrices, and instrument indexes.
- Support factory acceptance tests (FAT), site acceptance tests (SAT), commissioning, and startup activities.
- Troubleshoot complex automation and instrumentation issues
Customer and Stakeholder Engagement
- Conduct technical workshops with customers, consultants, EPCs, and system integrators.
- Translate operational requirements into practical automation solutions.
- Present technical proposals and defend automation architectures during project reviews.
- Support business development and presales opportunities.
Innovation and Continuous Improvement
- Evaluate emerging technologies such as:
- Industrial IoT (IIoT)
- Edge Computing
- Predictive Maintenance
- AI-enabled Analytics
- Digital Twins
- Identify opportunities to improve plant reliability, performance, safety, and sustainability.
Knowledge Management
- Develop technical standards, engineering templates, and best practices.
- Train and mentor engineers, sales teams, and system integrators.
- Lead technical communities and knowledge-sharing initiatives. Expert-level roles are expected to provide technical support, training, and mentoring across organizations and geographies.
Qualifications and Experience
Education:
Bachelor's Degree in (either one of):Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Communications Engineering, Instrumentation & Control Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering. Master's Degree preferred.
Experience:
8-15+ years of experience in:
- Process Automation
- Instrumentation & Control
- Industrial Control Systems
- Process Industries
Technical Knowledge:
- Strong knowledge of:
- DCS Platforms (e.g., Foxboro DCS, Honeywell Experion, Emerson DeltaV, Yokogawa CENTUM)
- PLC Platforms (Modicon, Siemens, Rockwell)
- SCADA Systems
- Functional Safety (IEC 61511)
- Instrumentation Standards (ISA, IEC)
- Industrial Networks (Modbus, Ethernet/IP, Profinet, OPC UA)
- Cybersecurity for Industrial Control Systems
- Instrument Sizing & Selection
- Process Control Strategies
Preferred Certifications:
- Certified Functional Safety Engineer (CFSE)
- ISA Certified Automation Professional (CAP)
- TÜV Functional Safety Certification
- PMP or equivalent project management certification
