Senior Software Engineer

This position designs, creates, maintains, audits, and improves software applications by performing coding, debugging, testing and troubleshooting throughout the application development process. The Senior Software Engineer will join the Enterprise Development team, which builds and supports the Enterprise platform: a multi-tenant, multi-language SaaS solution that powers FACTS payment plans, billing, online payments and financial aid management for thousands of educational institutions and the families they serve.

The role works across the full stack — C#/.NET and ASP.NET Core services and APIs, Angular single-page applications, and Microsoft SQL Server — in a layered architecture that is actively being modernized from legacy .NET Framework applications. They design solutions for complex projects and complete their work with no supervision. They mentor less experienced engineers and make recommendations for future development options. This person is an advocate for making improvements, for secure and high-quality engineering practices, and for working as a whole team to accomplish goals.

Responsibilities and Duties

Technical

• Researches, designs, implements and manages software applications based on user requirements, delivering full-stack features across ASP.NET Core APIs, Angular front ends and SQL Server.
• Writes, tests, and implements efficient, maintainable code that follows the team's layered architecture (Controllers → Services → Accessors → SQL Server) and project style guides.
• Maintains and develops existing applications by analyzing and identifying areas for modification, including modernizing legacy .NET Framework (WebForms, ASP.NET MVC) code onto .NET 10 and Angular.
• Designs and optimizes SQL Server schemas, queries and stored procedures using Dapper and Entity Framework Core.
• Builds and maintains integrations with payment gateways (credit card and ACH), AWS services, Azure Service Bus, and third-party systems such as QuickBooks Online.
• Writes automated unit, integration and API tests and contributes to code coverage and quality gates in the CI/CD pipeline.
• Participates in and leads code reviews through Azure DevOps pull requests, providing constructive, actionable feedback.
• Applies secure coding practices appropriate to a PCI DSS payments environment and remediates findings from static analysis and dependency scanning (Veracode, Checkmarx).
• Releases changes safely using feature flags (LaunchDarkly), Azure Pipelines and Octopus Deploy, and monitors production health using Datadog and Serilog logging.
• Supports production issues and incident triage, performing root-cause analysis and implementing durable fixes.
• Uses AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code) within the team's research–plan–implement workflow, and helps the team adopt them responsibly.
• Contributes to and keeps current the team's architecture documentation, style guides and technical reference docs.

Qualifications

Required

• Strong, hands-on experience building production applications in C# and .NET / ASP.NET Core.
• Experience building modern single-page applications with Angular and TypeScript.
• Strong SQL skills with Microsoft SQL Server, including query tuning and stored procedures.
• Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs.
• Proficiency with Git-based source control, pull-request workflows and CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps preferred).
• Experience writing automated unit and integration tests.

Preferred

• Experience maintaining or modernizing legacy .NET Framework applications (WebForms, ASP.NET MVC).
• Experience with Dapper and/or Entity Framework Core.
• Experience with AWS and/or Azure messaging and storage services.
• Experience in payments, fintech or other regulated environments (PCI DSS, NACHA, GLBA).
• Familiarity with feature flagging, observability tools (e.g., Datadog) and application security scanning.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools in a professional setting.
