Job Overview

This position is responsible responsible for the end-to-end preparation of Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF) financial statements, income tax returns, and compliance workpapers.

This is a home-based position located in the Philippines. This position demands strong technical knowledge of Australian superannuation law, contribution rules, pension phase compliance, and TBAR obligations, with hands-on proficiency in BGL Simple Fund 360 and XPM.

This position will require:

  • Reliable high-speed internet connection and a professional home office setup.
  • Availability operates within Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST) business hours, with a required minimum daily overlap of 7:00 am – 3:00 pm AEST
  • All client data must be handled in accordance with Australian privacy and data security obligations
  • Regular check-ins with the onshore manager via Microsoft Teams are expected as part of normal workflow management
  • Comfortability operating with a high degree of autonomy while remaining responsive and communicative with the onshore team

Activities include:

1) SMSF Compliance & Preparation

  • End-to-end preparation of SMSF financial statements and income tax returns
  • Ensure compliance with Australian taxation and superannuation laws, including SIS Act requirements
  • Process and review SMSF transactions using BGL Simple Fund 360
  • Reconciliation of bank accounts, investment portfolios, and member balances
  • Preparation of workpapers and audit-ready files for external SMSF auditors
  • Liaise with auditors and resolve audit queries in a timely manner

2) Contribution & Pension Phase Management

  • Track and monitor member contributions against concessional and non-concessional caps, including bring-forward and catch-up contribution rules
  • Prepare and manage Transfer Balance Account Reporting (TBAR) obligations for funds with members in pension phase
  • Support preparation of pension commencement documentation and minimum pension calculations

3) Workflow & Practice Management

  • Manage client workflows, jobs, and deadlines using XPM (Xero Practice Manager)
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client records across BGL, XPM and FYI Docs
  • Preparation of BAS/IAS workpapers for onshore review and lodgement where applicable
  • Prepare ATO correspondence and assist with SMSF annual return support via the ATO portal
  • Identify and escalate compliance risks, anomalies, or member balance discrepancies to the onshore manager/partner

4) Client & Trustee Support

  • Assist with drafting trustee resolutions, annual minutes, and investment strategy review documentation as directed
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with onshore team members regarding job status, queries, and turnaround timelines

5) Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Communicate proactively with the onshore manager or partner via Microsoft Teams or video conferencing on all active jobs
  • Assist with identifying process improvements and workflow efficiencies in SMSF compliance procedures
  • Participate in team meetings and training sessions as scheduled

Skills:

1) Technical Skills

  • High attention to detail and accuracy in SMSF financial statement preparation and compliance workpapers
  • Ability to identify and resolve SMSF compliance anomalies and member balance discrepancies
  • Proficiency in BGL Simple Fund 360, XPM, and Microsoft Excel
  • Familiarity with Australian practice technology platforms (FuseSign, ATOmate, FYI Docs advantageous)
  • Understanding of SuperStream, contribution processing, and ATO reporting obligations

2) Professional & Interpersonal Skills

  • Advanced written and verbal English communication skills, including the ability to draft professional client-facing workpapers and internal correspondence
  • Highly self-directed, with a structured approach to managing jobs, tracking deadlines, and escalating blockers without close daily supervision
  • Ability to manage multiple clients and concurrent deadlines in a high-volume practice environment
  • Collaborative team member who communicates openly and reliably with onshore managers and partners
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or equivalent video conferencing and collaboration tools
  • Alignment with Australian professional services culture, standards, and client service expectations

3) Preferred Skills

The following skills are not mandatory but will distinguish strong candidates:

  • Knowledge of associated entity structures including corporate trustees, discretionary trusts, and unit trusts
  • Familiarity with CAS 360 for corporate secretarial and trustee management workflows
  • Understanding of pension phase obligations, TBAR lodgement processes, and pension commencement documentation
  • Prior experience using FYI Docs or equivalent document management systems for an Australian accounting practice

Experience:

  • Typically, 3 – 5 years experience in SMSF accounting with an Australian public practice environment.
  • Hands-on experience with BGL Simple Fund 360
  • Working knowledge of XPM (Xero Practice Manager)
  • Demonstrated understanding of Australian SMSF taxation and superannuation compliance obligations.
  • Familiarity with FuseSign, ATOmate or FYI Docs within an Australian practice workflow is preferred.
  • Exposure to ATO Online Services for Agents / SMSF Portal is preferred.
