Senior Full-Stack / Automation Engineer

NexusPoint is hiring on behalf of a client for a Senior Full-Stack / Automation Engineer to help strengthen and scale an existing internal automation platform that supports critical day-to-day business operations.

This is an opportunity for a senior engineer who enjoys working with complex systems, integrations, automation, and backend architecture—and who can improve an existing platform without unnecessarily rebuilding what already works.

About the Role

Our client has developed a robust internal automation system that connects business operations across Google Apps Script, Google Workspace, Google Sheets, Gmail, Google Calendar, Slack, Calendly, Square, Google Drive, and a company website.

The system currently supports workflows including:

• Event inquiries and customer bookings
• Event tracking and management
• Employee scheduling and staffing
• Weekly schedule generation
• Payments and invoicing
• Website audits
• Operational alerts and notifications
• Owner approvals
• Recurring operational workflows and automations

The foundation is already in place. Your role will be to understand the existing system quickly, stabilize and improve it, complete remaining components, and help evolve it into a more reliable, maintainable, and scalable operating system.

Key Responsibilities

System Assessment & Stabilization

• Quickly understand a large, existing automation ecosystem and its business logic
• Review existing Google Apps Script and supporting integrations
• Identify duplicate, conflicting, fragile, or unnecessary processes
• Stabilize existing automations and address reliability issues
• Test critical workflows and identify potential failure points
• Protect business-critical processes involving customers, payments, scheduling, staffing, and events

Automation & Integration Engineering

• Develop and improve automations using JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, and Google Apps Script
• Build and maintain integrations using APIs, webhooks, OAuth, and third-party platforms
• Improve deduplication and idempotency across automated workflows
• Strengthen logging, monitoring, alerting, and error handling
• Investigate and resolve silent failures and integration issues
• Improve the reliability of scheduled and event-driven automations

Architecture & Backend Development

• Evaluate the existing architecture and recommend improvements where appropriate
• Help transition appropriate functionality from spreadsheets/scripts toward a more robust backend and database architecture
• Work with PostgreSQL, Supabase, or similar database technologies
• Centralize business rules where practical rather than duplicating logic across multiple scripts
• Establish stronger development, testing, release, and rollback practices
• Implement appropriate Git/GitHub version-control workflows

Business Change Management

A key part of this role is helping ensure the system can evolve with the business.

The long-term goal is to make business changes easier to manage without requiring the business owner to understand every underlying script, database record, or automation.

You will help create an architecture where changes can be traced across the system:

What changed → What systems are affected → What needs updating → What needs testing → What documentation needs updating

This includes:

• Designing systems that make dependencies and business rules easier to understand
• Centralizing configurable business rules where practical
• Reducing hard-coded logic across multiple components
• Making future changes safer and easier to implement
• Creating documentation that allows another engineer to understand and maintain the system

Documentation & Observability

• Document system architecture, workflows, integrations, and key business rules
• Create practical technical documentation for future maintenance
• Develop a simple owner-facing health view or dashboard showing whether critical automations are operating properly
• Establish appropriate monitoring and health checks for business-critical workflows

Safe Migration & Continuous Improvement

This role requires a careful, incremental approach to modernization.

We are not looking for someone who will immediately delete or rewrite the existing system.

The preferred approach is:

Understand → Stabilize → Build/Improve → Parallel Test → Verify → Cut Over → Retire Old Component

Existing Google Apps Script components should remain where they are reliable, effective, and appropriate.

The priority is to preserve working business logic while improving reliability, architecture, maintainability, and scalability.

We are looking for a senior-level engineer who can operate independently, make sound technical decisions, and work closely with a business owner who is actively involved in the project.

Technical Experience

Strong experience with several of the following:

• JavaScript / TypeScript

• REST APIs and third-party integrations
• Webhooks and event-driven workflows
• PostgreSQL / Supabase or similar databases
• Slack integrations
• OAuth and authentication
• Git / GitHub
• Automated testing
• Logging, monitoring, and error handling
• Workflow automation and internal business tools

Highly Valuable Experience

Experience with:

• Migrating systems built on Google Sheets, Apps Script, Zapier, Make, or similar automation platforms
• Modernizing spreadsheet-based operational systems
• Building internal tools for growing businesses
• Managing complex integrations across multiple SaaS platforms
• Safely migrating production workflows without disrupting business operations
• Designing systems around centralized business rules and configurable workflows
