Role Overview

This briefing outlines the mentoring and junior staff development responsibilities expected of an Actuary within the Employee Health & Benefits practice. These responsibilities support technical excellence, knowledge transfer, and long-term team capability building while complementing core actuarial and client-facing duties.

Mentoring & Team Development Responsibilities

  • Mentor and support junior actuarial staff through on-the-job guidance, technical coaching, and regular feedback on analytical work.
  • Provide direction on actuarial methodologies, modeling approaches, and best practices in healthcare and employee benefits analysis.
  • Review junior team members work product for accuracy, clarity, and adherence to actuarial standards, offering constructive feedback to support skill development.
  • Assist in onboarding and training new team members, including walkthroughs of actuarial models, tools, processes, and client deliverables.
  • Promote a culture of learning, quality, and collaboration by sharing knowledge, documenting methodologies, and supporting professional development efforts, including actuarial exam progress.
  • Serve as a technical resource for junior staff by helping troubleshoot analytical issues and guiding structured problem-solving approaches.
  • Support succession planning and team capability building through informal coaching and knowledge transfer.

Additional Expectations for Senior Actuary Roles (If Applicable)

For senior-level actuaries, mentoring responsibilities may also include providing informal input on junior team members technical proficiency, development progress, and readiness for increased responsibility.
