Senior Accountant

About the role

Xact Accounting is a Chartered Accounting firm working exclusively with builders, trade contractors and construction businesses across Australia. Our clients don't just want a set of accounts at the end of the month. They want to know what the numbers are telling them, and what to do about it.

That's where this role sits. You'll own the monthly close, build reconciliations from the ground up, and turn results into analysis that actually informs decisions. It suits someone who is confident in the technical work but also happy to speak up, ask questions and explain what they're seeing.

What you'll be doing

• Own the monthly closing process, including variance analysis and KPI reporting, and liaise with the accounting team to keep close and compliance on track
• Analyse business and financial results to identify the key drivers behind variances, along with emerging opportunities and risks
• Reconcile subsidiary ledger accounts to the main general ledger where applicable
• Prepare full balance sheet reconciliations to a high standard
• Support your Team Leader in the performance of their duties
• Uphold and promote the firm's values, and maintain the highest ethical and professional standards

What you'll bring

• At least 3 years of experience in accounting or bookkeeping
• The ability to build reconciliations from scratch, not just maintain existing ones
• Advanced Excel skills, plus experience with management reporting software
• Experience with Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks or equivalent
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• The ability to work to deadlines and stay composed under pressure
• An outgoing, proactive approach. You raise issues early rather than sitting on them

Nice to have

• Experience with Australian clients or Australian compliance requirements
• Exposure to the construction or trades sector, including job costing and progress claims
• A relevant professional membership or qualification (CPA, CA or equivalent)
