Senior Accountant / Controller
Job Type: Full-Time
Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM Central Time, with a 30-minute break
Job Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced and hands-on Senior Accountant / Controller to take full ownership of the accounting function for a growing apparel decoration, manufacturing, and e-commerce company with approximately 50 employees. This is a hands-on role where the successful candidate will work directly in the books every day, managing the full accounting cycle, including AP, AR, reconciliations, journal entries, month-end close, inventory accounting, landed costs, and financial reporting.
The ideal candidate will bring strong QuickBooks Online expertise and the ability to independently maintain accurate financial records, identify and resolve accounting issues, and improve accounting processes and controls. The owners should be able to rely on this person to provide complete, accurate, and clearly presented financials while remaining accountable for the day-to-day accounting function without requiring constant oversight.
Key Responsibilities:
- Take full ownership of the company's books and daily accounting activities from start to finish.
- Manage and monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable.
- Perform bank, credit card, payment processor, and balance-sheet reconciliations.
- Prepare, review, and post journal entries and adjusting entries.
- Lead the complete month-end close process within five to seven business days.
- Prepare accurate monthly financial statements and management reports.
- Present the owners with clear, organized, and reliable financial information.
- Review existing accounting records and correct inconsistencies, duplicate entries, and classification errors.
- Complete and maintain the chart of accounts and account-mapping structure.
- Establish clear accounting workflows for multiple team members who process transactions.
- Oversee accounting across both the apparel-decoration business and the growing blank-headwear business.
- Manage inventory accounting and ensure inventory transactions are accurately recorded.
- Calculate landed product costs, including product cost, freight, customs duties, tariffs, and other import-related expenses.
- Support monthly container imports from Bangladesh and properly allocate costs across inventory items.
- Reconcile Shopify, production, billing, payroll, sales-tax, banking, and payment platforms with QuickBooks Online.
- Maintain organized supporting documentation and a clear audit trail.
- Identify process gaps and implement stronger accounting procedures and internal controls.
- Coordinate with administrative staff while remaining personally accountable for the accuracy and completion of all accounting work.
- Provide daily or regular progress updates and respond promptly during scheduled working hours.
- Be fully available during the five-to-seven-day month-end closing period.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor of Accountancy degree is required.
- At least five years of hands-on accounting experience, preferably as a Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, or Controller.
- Advanced, hands-on experience with QuickBooks Online.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. accounting practices and financial reporting.
- Demonstrated experience independently managing the full month-end close process.
- Strong experience with account reconciliations, journal entries, AP, AR, and general-ledger accounting.
- Experience with inventory, manufacturing, apparel, wholesale, product-based, or e-commerce accounting.
- Understanding of landed-cost calculations for imported inventory.
- Ability to review disorganized books, identify problems, and establish accurate accounting processes.
- Ability to personally perform detailed accounting work without relying on the owners for daily direction.
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, accountability, and problem-solving skills.
- Strong written and spoken English.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality when handling sensitive financial information.
- Reliable computer, high-speed internet connection, and a professional remote workspace.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA, CMA, or another relevant accounting certification.
- Experience working with apparel decoration, screen printing, embroidery, headwear, or related manufacturing businesses.
- Experience accounting for international inventory purchases and monthly container shipments.
- Experience with Shopify and other integrated e-commerce platforms.
- Familiarity with platforms such as Printavo, Bill.com, Gusto, TaxJar, banking systems, and payment processors.
- Experience supervising or coordinating accounting-related work performed by administrative or remote team members.
