The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing and supporting key accounting processes, maintaining accurate financial records, completing complex account reconciliations, supporting month-end close and financial reporting, and providing accounting guidance and review support to junior accounting staff. The role works closely with the Assistant Controller and Controller to ensure accounting records and supporting schedules are accurate, complete, and prepared on time across multiple locations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Reporting & Month-End Close
- Perform and support assigned month-end close procedures to ensure timely and accurate completion.
- Prepare monthly financial statements and supporting schedules for review by the Assistant Controller and/or Controller.
- Generate and review General Ledger reports and investigate unusual balances, variances, or accounting discrepancies.
- Prepare and post adjusting journal entries, accruals, reclassifications, and other month-end entries as assigned.
- Perform Balance Sheet account reconciliations and investigate and resolve reconciling items.
- Maintain complete supporting documentation and schedules for month-end and year-end reporting.
Daily Sales & Revenue Reconciliation
- Manage and review daily sales reporting platforms across multiple locations.
- Reconcile daily sales activity to the General Ledger and applicable supporting systems.
- Investigate and resolve sales discrepancies and reporting variances.
- Ensure sales transactions are accurately and completely recorded in the accounting system.
Cash, Safe & Deposit Reconciliation
- Reconcile store safe balances for each location and investigate discrepancies.
- Reconcile Deposits in Transit (DIT) and monitor outstanding deposits through clearing.
- Reconcile Credit Card in Transit balances and ensure credit card settlements are properly recorded and cleared.
- Review cash and deposit activity for completeness and accuracy.
Inventory Accounting
- Review inventory reconciliations for each location.
- Reconcile inventory records between operational systems and the General Ledger.
- Investigate inventory variances and coordinate with operations or location management to resolve discrepancies.
- Prepare or review inventory-related adjusting entries and supporting schedules.
Sales Tax Compliance
- Prepare monthly sales tax computations for applicable locations and jurisdictions for management review.
- Reconcile taxable sales and sales tax liabilities to accounting records and sales reports.
- Maintain supporting documentation for sales tax filings and assist with resolving sales tax discrepancies.
Account Reconciliations & Accounting Review
- Review bank and credit card reconciliations.
- Review outstanding and unusual reconciling items and assist with timely resolution.
- Review transactions processed through Ramp and other financial platforms for proper accounting treatment, classification, and supporting documentation.
- Review General Ledger activity and identify errors, duplicate transactions, incorrect classifications, or unusual balances requiring adjustment.
Junior Accountant Support & Review
- Provide day-to-day accounting guidance and support to Junior Accountants.
- Review accounting tasks completed by Junior Accountants, including bank reconciliations, Ramp transactions, account reconciliations, and other assigned accounting schedules.
- Review work for accuracy, completeness, proper documentation, and compliance with established accounting procedures.
- Assist in training and onboarding accounting team members and provide guidance on accounting processes and systems.
- Communicate significant accounting issues, unresolved items, or discrepancies to the Assistant Controller and/or Controller.
Accounting Support & Process Improvement
- Assist the Assistant Controller and Controller with accounting schedules, reconciliations, financial reporting support, and other accounting requirements.
- Recommend practical improvements to accounting procedures, reconciliation processes, and reporting efficiency.
- Assist with audit, tax, and year-end requests by preparing schedules and supporting documentation.
- Maintain organized and audit-ready accounting records.
- Coordinate with operations and other departments to obtain required information and resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Perform other accounting and financial reporting duties as assigned by the Assistant Controller or Controller.
