Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Scientific and Research Communications Intern to join the NCIS Communications and Strategic Engagement team. As part of the team, you will support integrated scientific communications and research engagement initiatives that strengthen organisational reputation, engage clinical and research stakeholders, and advance our mission to translate cancer research into meaningful impact through effective knowledge dissemination and evidence-based communications that empower the scientific community and support patient care. This role provides hands-on exposure to scientific content creation, research communication platforms, academic event management, and multi-channel campaign delivery, working closely with clinical teams, researchers, and external academic partners. Key Responsibilities
- Bring ideas to life - by supporting the rollout of the NCIS Education and Research Communications Strategy to align engaging learning opportunities and scientific knowledge dissemination with institutional goals, and collaborating with education and research leads and various NCIS stakeholders to brainstorm innovative educational and communication initiatives.
- Shape learning and communication journeys - by assisting in the design of education roadmaps covering clinical, research, and patient-focused initiatives and projects.
- Coordinate cross-departmental education and research communication programmes - by collaborating with NCIS clinical, research, nursing, and allied health teams to schedule and organise training activities, scientific presentations, and knowledge-sharing events, manage logistics including programme scheduling and registration, and facilitate stakeholder communication to ensure efficient delivery.
- Develop and implement tracking and evaluation systems for education and research communication programmes - by creating monitoring tools to track participation and engagement metrics and collecting feedback to identify areas for improving both learning outcomes and communication effectiveness.
- Support content development and digital learning initiatives - by assisting in creating educational resources and research communication materials including slides, infographics, and digital content, whilst exploring new digital tools and platforms to enhance both learning delivery and scientific knowledge dissemination.
- Support education and research communication strategy and stakeholder engagement - by collaborating with the Learning & Development (L&D) Clinical Lead and NCIS leadership on strategic planning discussions for both educational programmes and research dissemination, whilst providing administrative support for accreditation processes, funding applications, and institutional reporting related to education and communication programmes.
Requirements
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's degree in marketing, strategic communications, media studies, life sciences, public health, or a related field.
- Interest in scientific communications or academic writing is advantageous.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with an interest in professional and academic storytelling.
- Willingness to learn how to communicate research findings and clinical insights to scientific and healthcare professional audiences.
- Interest in developing media relations skills and learning to engage with journalists and media outlets on scientific and healthcare topics.
- Basic proficiency in design software (e.g. Canva, Adobe Creative Suite) or willingness to learn.
- Familiarity with digital platforms and basic content creation tools.
- Interest in learning about data visualisation and academic presentation formats.
- Digitally savvy with curiosity about emerging trends in scientific communication and research dissemination.
- Openness to exploring academic and professional communication platforms.
- Organised and detail-oriented with ability to learn in a fast-paced research environment.
- Collaborative mindset and willingness to work with clinical and research teams.
- Curiosity about healthcare innovation, research methodologies, and scientific communication.
- Professional approach to communicating complex scientific and clinical information.
