This position works in our Technology support team to provide design, proactive, and reactive support services for our EPC and Asset Management teams. The SCADA Engineer will ensure that devices remain in compliance with Technology policies and procedures. The SCADA Engineer will play a key role in deploying and troubleshooting all solar power plant automation. They will also need to interface with QSEs, RTOs, and ISOs to ensure a market compliance and deadlines are met. This position will report to Head of Remote Workforce Strategy and the Director of Technology. This is a hybrid position, with most of the time spent working from home but with office attendance from time to time, as needed.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical owner of the SCADA function across ARI's operating fleet and new-build projects
- Provide live remote support to field technicians during operational events to diagnose communication failures and restore telemetry and SCADA visibility
- Enforce policies and procedures across all IT/OT systems
- Ensure NERC-CIP compliance for all inverter-based resources
- Create and manage documentation on all SCADA, and ICS infrastructure
- Manage inter-control center protocol for data transfer between the power plant and QSEs
- Manage RTU-RTU communications with external vendors and EPCs
- Review and manage all SCADA code bases including but not limited to IEC 61131-3
- Review facility models on an ongoing basis or as required
- Assist with proactive and reactive support for all DAS and SCADA systems
- Provide basic networking troubleshooting per our specifications
- Design, deploy, and maintain ARI's centralized SCADA data acquisition and historian platform across the operating fleet
- Develop and maintain custom data processing pipelines supporting site performance monitoring, curtailment analysis, and market data integration
- Build and administer the server and container infrastructure hosting all SCADA data, processing, and reporting services
- Develop and operate automated daily reporting that integrates site telemetry with operational ticketing and team collaboration workflows
- Coordinate SCADA-side updates supporting ERCOT, MISO, and CAISO resource registration and model maintenance processes, in partnership with the Interconnection team
- Lead portfolio-level NERC disturbance monitoring (PRC-028) planning and device specification across operating and new-build inverter-based facilities
- Serve as primary technical point of contact with SCADA, PPC, EMS, and BESS controls vendors, with O&M providers, and with QSEs for technical coordination and escalation
- Author SCADA specifications for ARI new-build projects, covering HMI, PPC, network architecture, field network enclosures, UPS, and cybersecurity requirements
- Review and respond to vendor and EPC SCADA design submittals, RFIs, and commissioning documentation
- Develop and enforce SCADA commissioning deliverables in EPC contracts and job books, including FAT/SAT, point-to-point testing, plant controller commissioning, master points lists, and as-built backups
- Diagnose and remediate plant-level control issues across active power, reactive power, frequency esponse, and plant controller tuning, in coordination with O&M and original equipment manufacturers
- Familiarity with OT cybersecurity discovery, vulnerability assessments, and remediation planning processes, including CIP-003-9 Low-impact program elements and tabletop exercises coordinated with third-party compliance firms
- Familiarity with OT firewall, VPN, and remote-access architecture supporting SCADA and control room connectivity
- Author and maintain the SCADA knowledge base for the fleet, including as-built network architecture, device inventories, registration data, and site-specific operational considerations
Qualifications
- 3-5 years in of industrial SCADA support and design
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline
- Experience with solar operations and design
- Experience with inverter-based resources
- Experience troubleshooting and programming/scripting with these languages (Bash, Python, IEC 61131-3)
- Experience troubleshooting computer networking (TCP/IP, RS232/485, Routing/Switching, and Wireless)
- Experience with NERC-CIP
- Hands-on experience with Inductive Automation Ignition and Ignition Designer
- Hands-on experience with time-series databases (InfluxDB or equivalent), Telegraf, Grafana, and Python data pipelines
- Familiarity with Linux container or virtualization infrastructure (Proxmox, LXC, Docker, or equivalent)
- Working knowledge of ERCOT, MISO, CAISO market mechanics (RARF, QSA, PLD, GREDP, ICCP)
- Working knowledge of NERC PRC standards (PRC-028, PRC-002, PRC-005) and NERC CIP-003 Low-impact program elements
- Hands-on experience with SEL RTAC platforms (e.g., SEL-3555, SEL-2240 Axion) and acSELerator RTAC programming
- Familiarity with OPC-UA, DNP3, Modbus TCP, and IEC 61850 protocols (in addition to TCP/IP and serial)
- Familiarity with enterprise firewall and VPN platforms (e.g., Palo Alto, Fortinet)
- Experience reviewing P&C drawings, single-line diagrams, and substation, PPC, and BESS controls design packages
- Experience leading SCADA Site Acceptance Testing and commissioning deliverable review
- Excellent written and verbal skills is a MUST.
