An RF Planning Engineer is responsible for designing, planning, and optimizing radio frequency (RF) networks to ensure optimal coverage, capacity, and performance for wireless communication systems (e.g., 2G/3G/4G/LTE/5G). The role involves both theoretical planning and practical analysis using specialized tools.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and plan RF coverage for cellular networks (macro, micro, indoor)
- Perform link budget calculations and propagation modeling
- Conduct site planning, frequency planning, and interference analysis
- Optimize network performance (coverage, capacity, quality)
- Analyze KPIs such as dropped calls, call setup success rate, and throughput
- Use RF planning tools (e.g., Atoll, Planet, Asset) for simulations
- Collaborate with site acquisition, transmission, and core network teams
- Support rollout of new technologies (LTE, 5G NR)
- Conduct drive tests and analyze field measurement data
- Prepare technical reports, coverage maps, and optimization recommendations
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field
- Strong understanding of RF principles and wireless communication
- Knowledge of cellular technologies (GSM, UMTS, LTE, 5G)
- Familiarity with RF planning and optimization tools
- Understanding of propagation models and antenna theory
- Ability to interpret KPIs and performance metrics
