JOB OVERVIEW
The Project Engineer – Waterways supports the planning, coordination, supervision, and execution of water conveyance works for hydropower or pumped storage projects, including tunnels, penstocks, surge shafts, spillways, and related underground structures.
The role works closely with construction teams, contractors, designers, geotechnical specialists, and project management to deliver works safely, on schedule, within budget, and to quality standards.
This role requires strong knowledge of underground excavation, drill-and-blast tunneling, hydraulic structures, and water conveyance systems, ideally from hydropower, dam, or major infrastructure projects.
THE ROLE
- Assist in the planning, execution, and monitoring of waterway construction activities, including tunnels, penstocks, surge shafts, intake structures, and tailrace systems.
- Coordinate daily construction activities with contractors, site supervisors, survey teams, and engineering consultants.
- Monitor underground excavation works utilizing drill-and-blast tunneling methods and ensure compliance with approved construction methodologies.
- Review construction drawings, technical specifications, method statements, risk assessments, and inspection plans.
- Supervise site activities and ensure adherence to project schedules, quality standards, and safety requirements.
- Support the management of geotechnical risks and construction challenges associated with underground and hydraulic structures.
- Monitor progress and prepare engineering reports, site updates, and productivity assessments.
- Coordinate with structural, civil, geotechnical, and electro-mechanical teams to resolve technical and interface issues.
- Assist in quality inspections and verification of welding activities associated with penstocks, steel linings, and related water conveyance structures.
- Participate in contractor meetings, progress reviews, and technical discussions to support project objectives .
- Support testing, commissioning, and handover activities for completed waterway systems.
- Ensure compliance with applicable engineering codes, project specifications, and environmental requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering ; PRC License preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in large-scale infrastructure, hydropower, dam, mining, or underground construction projects; 10+ years preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in underground drill-and-blast tunneling projects (NATM or similar conventional tunneling methods).
- Experience in hydropower, pumped storage, dam, or water conveyance projects is highly preferred.
- Familiarity with construction and installation of penstocks, steel lining systems, and associated welding activities is highly desirable.
- Understanding of geotechnical considerations, tunnel support systems, groundwater management, and underground construction risks.
- Knowledge of hydraulic structures and water conveyance systems.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, MS Project, Primavera P6, and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong problem-solving, coordination, and contractor management skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary project environment.
- Mandarin/Chinese speaking ability is highly preferred.
- Willing to work 100% onsite and be assigned to either Rizal or Laguna project locations.
