Summary
The
People & Culture Manager oversees all aspects of the employee lifecycle and HR operations, including recruitment, onboarding, offboarding, performance management, retention initiatives, employee relations, and disciplinary processes. This role requires the ability to balance professionalism, empathy, and accountability while ensuring compliance with California labor laws and HR best practices.

Key Responsibilities
Talent Acquisition & Hiring
- Lead full-cycle recruiting for all roles, including sourcing, interviewing, reference checks, and offer management.
- Build strategic talent pipelines to meet ongoing staffing needs.
- Partner with the leadership team to refine job requirements and identify top talent.
Onboarding & Offboarding
- Design and implement an engaging onboarding experience that integrates new employees into the culture and sets clear expectations.
- Coordinate orientation, training plans, and early-performance check-ins.
- Manage compliant and supportive offboarding processes, including exit interviews, documentation, and final pay.
Performance Management & Development
- Oversee the full performance management cycle, including probationary reviews, quarterly/annual performance evaluations, corrective action plans, and development planning.
- Support managers in delivering constructive, consistent feedback and coaching.
- Identify skill gaps and recommend training or development initiatives.
- Track performance trends and work with leadership to strengthen overall team effectiveness.
Employee Retention & Engagement
- Develop and implement retention strategies to reduce turnover and increase employee satisfaction.
- Monitor culture health through check-ins, feedback tools, and stay interviews.
- Recommend improvements to scheduling, communication, workflows, recognition, and team culture to enhance long-term employee commitment.
- Create and support programs that foster teamwork, career growth, and a positive workplace environment.
Employee Relations & Culture
- Serve as a trusted resource for employees and managers regarding workplace concerns and conflict resolution.
- Ensure timely, fair, and thorough handling of employee relations matters.
- Promote a respectful, inclusive, and professional culture aligned with company values.
- Support leadership in reinforcing behavioral and conduct expectations.
Disciplinary Process & Compliance
- Manage corrective action processes, investigations, and documentation of misconduct or performance concerns.
- Ensure consistent and compliant application of policies across all departments.
- Maintain up-to-date HR policies and the employee handbook in accordance with California labor laws and industry standards.
HR Operations & Administration
- Serve as the internal liaison for the outsourced HR agency, coordinating communication, sharing relevant context, and ensuring legal and operational alignment.
- Maintain employee data, personnel files, I-9 compliance, and other required documentation.
- Support benefits administration and employee leave management (PTO, CFRA, FMLA, sick leave).
- Oversee timekeeping accuracy, employment records, and state-required postings.
- Generate HR reports to monitor staffing, performance, and retention metrics.
- Special assignments on people-culture-related projects set forth by senior management to drive continuous improvement in people management and workplace experience.
Safety, Risk Management & Workplace Standards
- Support compliance with workplace safety protocols and wellness-center-specific requirements.
- Manage workplace incident reporting, documentation, and follow-up.
- Partner with leadership to ensure a safe, respectful, and professional working environment.
Requirements
- 7+ years of progressive HR experience, preferably in hospitality, wellness, retail, healthcare, or service-oriented industries.
- Proven ability to attract, hire, and retain top-tier practitioners and support staff. Ability to conduct online research and talent sourcing to find and engage the best candidates.
- Strong understanding of California labor law is a big plus.
- Demonstrated experience leading performance management and employee relations cases, HR compliance, and best practices.
- Proven ability to develop and implement retention and engagement strategies.
- Excellent communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Ability to multitask, problem-solve, and prioritize in a dynamic setting.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to maintain strict confidentiality.
- Prior experience working in US California time zone
