Outpatient Medical Coder reviews outpatient medical records and assigns accurate diagnostic and procedure codes to support billing, compliance, and reimbursement processes.
Responsibilities
- Review outpatient medical records and assign ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes
- Code outpatient encounters including SDS (Same Day Surgery), OBS (Observation), and ED (Emergency Department) cases
- Ensure coding accuracy based on clinical documentation and coding guidelines
- Support proper claim submission and billing accuracy
- Identify documentation gaps and coordinate with healthcare providers when needed
- Follow HIPAA and healthcare compliance standards
- Maintain productivity and quality coding standards
Qualifications
- Must have at least 1 year of outpatient medical coding experience (SDS, OBS, ED)
- Healthcare or Allied Health graduate preferred
- Coding certification such as CPC or CCS-P is a plus
- Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and outpatient coding system
