We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Outpatient Cardiology Medical Coder to support professional fee coding operations for a fast-paced cardiology practice. This role is responsible for accurately reviewing and coding outpatient cardiology encounters, diagnostic procedures, and Evaluation & Management (E/M) services while ensuring compliance with coding regulations and payer guidelines.
The ideal candidate has strong expertise in cardiology coding, a solid understanding of CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems, and hands-on experience working within the EPIC EMR environment. This position requires excellent analytical skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with providers, billing teams, and compliance staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and accurately code outpatient cardiology professional services using CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS coding systems
- Assign appropriate E/M levels based on provider documentation and current AMA guidelines
- Code outpatient diagnostic cardiology procedures including but not limited to:
- Echocardiograms
- Stress tests
- Holter and Event monitors
- EKG/ECG interpretations
- Cardiac imaging and other diagnostic studies
- Ensure proper diagnosis linkage and medical necessity documentation
- Review provider documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Communicate with providers regarding missing, incomplete, or unclear documentation
- Identify coding trends, denials, and areas for coding education or process improvement
- Maintain productivity, quality, and turnaround time expectations
- Stay current with cardiology coding updates, CMS regulations, and payer-specific requirements
- Collaborate with billing, compliance, and clinical teams to resolve coding-related issues
- Assist with coding audits, denial resolution, and compliance initiatives as needed
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of outpatient cardiology coding experience
- Strong experience with:
- Cardiology procedural coding
- Diagnostic cardiology coding
- E/M coding
- Hands-on experience using EPIC EMR
- Strong knowledge of:
- CPT
- ICD-10-CM
- HCPCS
- CMS and commercial payer guidelines
- Ability to interpret cardiology documentation and medical terminology accurately
- High level of attention to detail and coding accuracy
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
- CPC, CCS-P, or equivalent coding certification preferred
- Experience coding for multi-provider cardiology practices
- Familiarity with modifier usage and documentation requirements
- Experience with coding audits and denial resolution
- Understanding of compliance standards and payer reimbursement methodologies
