We are seeking an experienced
Outpatient Cardiology Medical Coder to join our healthcare team and support professional fee coding for a high-volume cardiology practice. The ideal candidate has extensive experience coding outpatient cardiology encounters, diagnostic procedures, and Evaluation & Management (E/M) services while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and optimal reimbursement.
This role requires a detail-oriented coding professional with strong knowledge of cardiology terminology, CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS, and payer-specific coding guidelines. Experience using
EPIC EMR is required.
Key Responsibilities
- Review clinical documentation and accurately assign CPT, ICD-10-CM, and HCPCS codes for outpatient cardiology professional services.
- Assign accurate Evaluation & Management (E/M) codes in accordance with current AMA coding guidelines.
- Code outpatient cardiology diagnostic procedures, including but not limited to:
- Echocardiograms
- Stress tests
- Holter and Event Monitor interpretations
- EKG/ECG interpretations
- Cardiac imaging and other diagnostic studies
- Ensure appropriate diagnosis-to-procedure linkage and verify medical necessity documentation.
- Review provider documentation for coding completeness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.
- Communicate with physicians and clinical staff to clarify incomplete or ambiguous documentation.
- Identify coding trends, recurring denials, and documentation improvement opportunities.
- Meet established productivity, accuracy, and turnaround time expectations.
- Maintain compliance with CMS regulations, AMA coding guidelines, and commercial payer requirements.
- Stay current with coding updates, payer policies, and changes affecting outpatient cardiology coding.
- Collaborate with billing, revenue cycle, compliance, and clinical teams to resolve coding-related issues.
- Participate in coding quality initiatives, audits, and ongoing process improvement efforts.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of outpatient cardiology coding experience.
- Hands-on experience coding:
- Outpatient cardiology professional services
- Cardiology diagnostic procedures
- Evaluation & Management (E/M) services
- Required experience using EPIC EMR.
- Strong knowledge of:
- CPT
- ICD-10-CM
- HCPCS
- AMA E/M guidelines
- CMS and commercial payer coding requirements
- Ability to accurately interpret cardiology documentation, medical terminology, and physician notes.
- Excellent analytical skills with exceptional attention to detail and coding accuracy.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- CPC, CCS-P, or equivalent professional coding certification preferred.
- Experience coding for multi-provider outpatient cardiology practices.
- Familiarity with modifier assignment and documentation requirements.
- Experience performing coding audits, denial analysis, and appeals.
- Knowledge of coding compliance, payer policy updates, and revenue cycle best practices.
