Medical Health Billing Specialist

We are seeking a detail-oriented Medical Billing Specialist to manage billing operations for a behavioral health practice. This role covers the full revenue cycle, from insurance eligibility verification and claims submission to denial management and payment posting, along with client and provider phone communications. The ideal candidate brings hands-on medical billing experience, strong organizational skills, and comfort navigating multiple insurance portals and billing systems.

Key Responsibilities:

• Handle inbound and outbound calls (approximately 10 per day) covering client inquiries, therapist questions, eligibility and benefits checks, and claim status follow-ups, including calls lasting up to 30 minutes
• Verify insurance eligibility and benefits for new clients prior to intake and service commencement
• Prepare and submit insurance claims through relevant billing systems and portals
• Review and reconcile ERA/EOB documents, ensuring accurate posting to accounts receivable tracking sheets
• Manage denial resolution by identifying issues, documenting reasons, and handling resubmissions
• Process client payment method updates and maintain accurate billing records and account notes
• Maintain and navigate insurance portals such as Availity, TherapyNotes, and SimplePractice
• Organize documentation and support internal operations, including SOPs, templates, and tracking sheets in Google
• Post payments accurately across multiple billing systems

Mandatory Skills:

• Direct experience in medical billing, either from a corporate setting or as a VA, including hands-on behavioral or mental health billing experience (ICD-10)
• Experience working with insurance portals such as Availity, TherapyNotes, or SimplePractice
• HIPAA certification (training provided if not already certified)
• Proficiency in Google Sheets for tracking accounts receivable, payments, and billing updates
• Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to work independently
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal

Preferred Skills:

• Formal medical billing certification (not required, but a plus)
• Prior experience specifically in mental health or behavioral health billing settings
• Experience managing a high volume of insurance-related calls
• Organized, proactive, and resourceful with a self-starter mindset
