Your Role
As a Medical Coding Manager - Inpatient DRG, you will:

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Medical Coding Manager - Inpatient DRG is responsible for the day-to-day operations and oversight of coding processes to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant assignment of diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient services. This leader ensures adherence to regulatory guidelines and payer requirements and supports optimal reimbursement through quality coding practices.

Operational Oversight:
  • Supervise and support inpatient coding staff including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Monitor coding productivity, accuracy, and turnaround time for coding completion.
  • Ensure timely resolution of coding-related edits and billing holds.
  • Monitors and ensures departmental budget compliance.
Quality & Compliance:
  • Monitor and supports coding audits and accuracy reviews, ensuring compliance with ICD-10, CPT/HCPCS, and applicable CMS/OIG regulations.
  • Address coding-related denials and partner with billing and A/R teams to identify root causes.
  • Stay current with regulatory and coding updates and disseminate guidance to staff.
  • Ensure coding policies & procedures are current and reflect the most compliant/accepted practices for medical coding.
Collaboration & Support:
  • Work closely with CDI, HIM, Revenue Integrity, Billing, and Clinical departments to ensure clean claim generation.
  • Support charge description master (CDM) accuracy through collaboration with revenue integrity.
  • Coordinate with IT on encoder, EHR, and CAC system optimization.
Education & Training
  • Provide regular coder education on coding updates, documentation changes, and audit findings.
  • Mentor coding supervisors or medical coders to support succession planning and career development.
Coordinating with Healthcare Providers:
  • Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure timely and accurate documentation that reflects the care provided to patients. Obtain clarification as appropriate.

What You Need
Non-negotiables
  • Coding Management Experience: At least 5 years IP DRG medical coding experience, 2+ years in IP DRG coding leadership role. Previous experience managing hybrid/remote coding teams
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field
  • Credential/Certification: Active Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or Certified Inpatient Coder (CIC) or Certified Documentation Improvement Practitioner (CDIP).
  • Licensure: Registered Nurse and with active PHRN or USRN license.
  • RCM Knowledge: Extensive, comprehensive working knowledge of medical terminology, Anatomy and Physiology, diagnostic and procedural coding and MS-DRG, APR DRG assignment. Strong knowledge of HCCs, NCCI edits, and medical necessity concepts. Must be proficient in identifying POA, SOI and ROM indicators for Inpatient records as well as HACs and PSIs to ensure accurate hospital reimbursement. Familiarity with HIPAA regulations.
  • Software Knowledge: Proficiency with electronic medical records (EMR) such as Epic, Cerner, or Meditech.
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills and customer service skills (CEFR level of at least B2 for both verbal and written).
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Master's degree or credential in business, healthcare, or related field preferred
  • Software Knowledge: Current experience with Computer Assisted Coding (CAC) is preferred. Encoder experience (3M/Solventum, Encoder Pro, Codify) preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint). Proficiency with Data Analytics software (Tableau, PowerBI).
  • RCM Knowledge: Prior experience with US healthcare providers or payers.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Ability to pay close attention to details strong follow-up and follow-through skills
  • Regularly makes complex decisions within the scope of the position, and is comfortable working independently
  • Requires the use of independent judgment, discretion and decision-making abilities
  • Demonstrates teamwork and integrity in all work-related activities
  • Ability to interact with internal and external customers in a professional manner
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Experience in a matrixed environment
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
  • Safeguard patient health information in compliance with HIPAA standards.
