Context
Overview
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with strong experience in metro rail design projects, specifically in tunnel ventilation design and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. The ideal candidate will support the design, analysis, and coordination of mechanical systems for underground and elevated metro infrastructure, ensuring compliance with project requirements, safety standards, and applicable codes.
The Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for the design and engineering of tunnel ventilation systems for metro rail projects, including normal and emergency ventilation scenarios. The role requires hands-on experience in ventilation calculations, CFD modelling, system sizing, equipment selection, design coordination, and preparation of technical deliverables across various design stages.
Missions/Main Duties
- Develop tunnel ventilation system designs for metro rail projects, including tunnels, underground stations, shafts, and ancillary spaces.
- Perform ventilation calculations for normal operation, smoke management, emergency evacuation, and thermal comfort requirements.
- Carry out CFD simulations for tunnel and station ventilation performance, smoke propagation, piston effect, and emergency scenarios.
- Prepare design basis reports, calculation notes, technical specifications, drawings, and design reports.
- Size and select ventilation equipment such as jet fans, axial fans, dampers, louvers, smoke extraction systems, and related mechanical components.
- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including rail systems, civil, architectural, E&M, fire life safety, and operations teams.
- Review interfaces with tunnel alignment, station layout, shaft arrangements, and evacuation provisions.
- Ensure designs comply with applicable international standards, local regulations, fire and life safety requirements, and employer/project specifications.
- Participate in design reviews, workshops, safety reviews, and client coordination meetings.
- Support preparation of tender documentation, technical submissions, and responses to client comments.
- Review vendor documents, shop drawings, and design submissions where required.
- Provide technical support during detailed design, construction support, testing, and commissioning stages.
Profile/Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
- Master's degree in a relevant specialization is an advantage.
- Minimum 5 to 10 years of experience in mechanical design for metro rail, railway, or tunnel infrastructure projects.
- Proven experience in tunnel ventilation system design for metro rail or underground transportation projects.
- Strong working experience in CFD modelling and analysis for ventilation and smoke control applications.
- Familiarity with metro rail design standards, fire/life safety criteria, and railway project delivery processes.
- Experience in design consultancy environment is preferred.
- Professional registration or membership is an advantage.
