Job Summary
The Market Janitor is responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and safety throughout the market premises. This role involves the regular sanitization of public spaces, vendor areas, walkways, and restrooms, as well as the prompt disposal of waste. A key focus is ensuring a clean, welcoming, and hazard-free environment for both market vendors and shoppers.
Key Responsibilities
Daily Cleanliness & Sanitization: Sweep, mop, scrub, and pressure-wash market walkways, corridors, stalls, and common areas.
Waste Management: Collect, sort, and properly dispose of organic, recyclable, and general waste from market stalls and public bins. Ensure waste storage areas are kept secure and sanitary.
Restroom Maintenance: Clean, disinfect, and restock public and staff restrooms throughout the day (sinks, toilets, mirrors, soap, and tissue dispensers).
Spill & Hazard Response: Promptly attend to oil, water, or organic spills to prevent slip-and-fall accidents, using appropriate Wet Floor signage.
Deep Cleaning: Perform scheduled deep-cleaning tasks, including scrubbing drains, washing walls, clearing debris from drainage grates, and power-washing loading docks.
Inventory Tracking: Monitor and report the inventory levels of cleaning supplies, chemicals, and restroom consumables to the supervisor.
Safety & Compliance: Use and handle industrial cleaning chemicals, detergents, and equipment safely, strictly adhering to safety guidelines and wearing required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Qualifications & Requirements
Education: High school graduate, GED, or equivalent is preferred but not required.
Experience: Proven experience as a janitor, custodian, or cleaner, preferably in high-traffic commercial environments, wet markets, or malls.
Physical Stamina: Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and carry heavy waste loads (up to 40–50 lbs) for extended periods. Comfort working in wet, high-humidity, or outdoor conditions.
Skills
Familiarity with industrial cleaning equipment (e.g., pressure washers, floor scrubbers, wet/dry vacuums).
Knowledge of proper chemical handling and dilution techniques.
Strong time management and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
